Feb. 22, 2013

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Jared Theisen drove in three runs, as Oakland (0-2) dropped a doubleheader at Maryland (2-3) on Friday, 15-4 and 8-4, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Field. Nolan Jacoby, Kyle Bobolts and Robby Enslen each had three hits.

"Our guys battled every pitch of both games today," said head coach John Musachio. "Jason Hager and Jake Paulson had strong outings as our starting pitchers."

Jason Hager started game one and threw 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and earned a no decision. Hager, who led OU in strikeouts last season, finished with four punchouts against the Terrapins. Reliever Lucas Scocchia (0-1) suffered the loss for OU, while Jimmy Reed (1-1) struck out eight batters over seven innings and picked up the win.

Jake Paulson (0-1) started game two for the Golden Grizzlies and allowed just three runs over five innings, while striking out three batters. Paulson scattered seven hits and left seven runners stranded on base. Bobby Ruse (1-0) earned the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

"As our young bullpen gets experience, we will be a very strong pitching staff," added Musachio. "Offensively, we did a lot of good things against a talented pitching staff. Defensively, we were very good today."

The Golden Grizzlies did not commit an error in either game. Oakland scored four runs and had a lead in both games, while scratching out 15 hits on the day.

Game 1 Recap
Jacoby and Bobolts both went 3-for-4 at the plate as Oakland pounded out 11 hits. Bobolts drove in two runs and Enslen was 2-for-4.

Theisen had an infield single to drive in Enslen with Oakland's first run of the season in the second inning. An RBI-groundout from Connor Mielock gave OU the lead 2-1.

Bobolts had a two-RBI single with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to put Oakland in front 4-1. The lead could have been more, but the aggressive Grizzlies had three runners cut down at home plate in the first four innings.

Maryland scored seven runs in the fifth inning and added six more in the bottom of the eighth to put the contest out of reach. Charlie White was 3-for-4, driving in four runs and scoring twice to lead the Terps. Five UMD players had multiple hits.

Game 2 Recap
An opportunistic Oakland side scratched out four runs from four hits in the nightcap, with Theisen providing a two-RBI double. The Golden Grizzlies drew nine walks, including three by Jacoby.

Oakland took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Trent Drumheller scored on an RBI-groundout by Jacoby. OU held the lead until the second inning when Maryland responded with a pair of runs.

The Terps took a 3-1 lead in the third, but Paulson kept Maryland off the board for the next two innings, including escaping a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. That inspired OU to get a run back with an RBI-single from Enslen in the fifth. OU had a chance for more, but the Golden Grizzlies left the bases loaded to end the inning.

Maryland scored five runs in the sixth inning to break the game open. White again led the charge for the Terps as both he and Kevin Martir finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored each.

Jonah Lakatos gave Oakland a strong outing out of the bullpen. He threw two scoreless innings and allowed just two hits, while striking out two batters.

The two teams will resume play on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
