ROCHESTER, Mich. - Ian Yetsko, Aaron Cieslak and Kyle Bobolts each had two hits, but Oakland (10-25) lost, 15-4, to Central Michigan (16-21) on Tuesday at Theunissen Park. The Golden Grizzlies split the season series with the Chippewas, with each team winning at home.
"Today was our most disappointing effort of the year," said Oakland head coach John Musachio. "I fully expect our team to come out and play up to our capabilities in every game for the rest of the year."
Yetsko singled to drive in the first OU run of the game in the fourth inning. Oakland worked the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth and Todd Dunham was hit by a pitch to force in a run to make it 3-2.
It was as close as Oakland would get, as Central Michigan scored four runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh inning respectively. The Golden Grizzlies tried to rally in the sixth, on an RBI-single by Bobolts, but left the bases loaded with the tying run at the plate. OU stranded 12 runners, while CMU left 10.
Yetsko and Bobolts were both 2-for-4, while Cieslak went 2-for-5. CMU outhit Oakland 12-9. Tyler Huntey hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning and was 2-for-4 and drove in four runs. Nate Theunissen was 2-for-3 and also had four RBIs.
Starter Bryan Jagielo (0-1) struck out two batters, but took the loss for OU. Jordan Foley (3-0) maintained his unbeaten record this season, striking out four over 5.1 innings. Sean Renzi (1) earned the save by pitching the final 3.2 innings.
Chris Van Dyke made his first pitching appearance of the season for the Golden Grizzlies. Both Van Dyke and Dan Augustine pitched one inning of scoreless relief.
"We had a few bright spots," said Musachio. "Ian Yetsko and Aaron Cieslak played well. Freshman Chris Van Dyke also made a successful return to the mound."
Oakland will look to rebound on Wednesday, when it hosts Olivet at the OU Baseball Field at 3 p.m.
