Oakland Drops Two to Maryland 7-3, 10-2

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Shannon Cleveland smashed a homerun and drove in two runs and Erin Galloway had two hits and an RBI as the Oakland softball team fell to Maryland in a doubleheader 7-3 and 10-2 (5) and Robert E. Taylor Stadium on Wednesday.

"We saw a lot of good things and we have to build off of the positives from today," said assistant coach Monique Johnson. "We look to get one percent better every single day and today we did that and we will continue to do that over the course of the season."

In this first game, Maryland jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two RBI single by Sloane Van Meter. The Golden Grizzlies fought back to make the score 3-2 on a Cleveland RBI double to right center field in the second and a Megan McQueen RBI single in the third inning.

The Terrapins added three runs in the bottom of the third highlighted by a leadoff homerun by Shannon Bustillos. Oakland would add one more run on a Galloway single to score Erika Polidori but UMD added two runs in the sixth to ice the game.

Bailee Braunreuther (0-1) pitched 6.0 innings giving up seven earned runs, eight hits and struck out five. UMD's Kendra Knight (3-0tossed a complete game, scattering seven hits and fanned 12.

In the nightcap, Oakland grabbed the early lead scoring in the first inning on a Leah DiCristofaro single to center and a Cleveland home run that hugged the left field line in the second for a 2-0 lead. The Terps scored four runs in the third and five runs in the fourth as Candice Beards hit a two-run home run to left-center to give Maryland an eight-run win.

Brittany Doyle (0-2) threw 4.1 innings, giving up 10 runs, eight earned, and struck out two. The Terps' Kaitlyn Schmeiser (2-1) went the distance, allowing six hits and two earned runs.

Oakland will be on the field tomorrow as they face Hampton in a doubleheader starting at noon at Lady Pirates Softball Complex.
