Oakland Defuses The Rockets Twice To Close Out Home Season

May 3, 2011

Game 1 | Game 2

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Freshman Katie Moy scattered five hits and one run for her first collegiate win and sophomore Abbie Richardson had four hits with three of them doubles as the Oakland University softball team (16-27) swept Toledo (8-37) 2-1 (9 innings), 7-6, Tuesday afternoon at the OU Softball Field.

"We fought for both victories today," said head coach LaDonia Hughes. "Katie (Moy) and Bailee (Braunreuther) threw great games for us today. Katie threw 97 pitches in nine innings which is pretty good. Our defense made some nice plays for her. In the second game, we didn't execute offensively early in the game. When it counted though and we needed to get runs, we came through."

In the second inning for Toledo, with one out, Lani Ernst tripled down the right field line. Moy got a strike out and a pop out to end the inning.

In the third inning, Courtney McCarthy put the ball over the left field fence to make it 1-0.

In the fourth, freshman Erika Polidori singled down the left field line. Polidori stole second and moved to third on a single down the right field line by sophomore Erin Galloway. Junior Leah DiCristofaro hit a sacrifice to score Polidori.

In the sixth, Alyssa Foy drew a walk. Jillian Spink hit a fly ball that was misplayed allowing Foy to reach third and Spink second. Moy struck out Morgan Smith to end the threat.

In the seventh, Richardson doubled and was replaced by junior Colleen Zimmerman. The Rockets got a strike out to end the inning.

In the ninth, Toledo opened with a walk and a fielder's choice to put two on with no outs. Moy caught a pop up, then got the next batter to hit into a double play.

In the bottom of the ninth with two outs, DiCristofaro drew a walk and moved to second on a single by Richardson. Bailee Braunreuther came in to pinch run for DiCristofaro. Senior Marisa Everitt delivered a pinch-hit double down the right field line to score Braunreuther to end the game.

For Oakland, junior Kelsey Krych and Richardson had two hits each. Krych moved her career stolen base total to 66, fifth all-time in The Summit League. Moy (1-0) gave up five hits, one run, walked three and struck out four in nine innings.

For Toledo, McCarthy had a home run. Jen Solanics (4-18) gave up seven hits, two runs, walked two and struck out four in 8.2 innings.

In the nightcap, in the first inning, Polidori tripled to right field and scored on a double to center field by DiCristofaro. Freshman Shannon Cleveland singled past the third baseman. DiCristofaro made a great slide to avoid the tag at home to make it 2-0.

The teams would each score a run in the third inning to make it 3-1, Oakland. The Rockets would score a run in the fourth to cut the margin to one.

In the fifth inning, Toledo would take advantage of four OU errors to score four runs. That put UT up 6-3, which was the score headed into the bottom of the sixth.

Junior Colleen Zimmerman led off with a double to right center field. Following a pop up, Polidori was hit by a pitch. A ground out moved the runners each a base with DiCristofaro being hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Richardson crushed a double to centerfield that cleared the bases. The Rockets made a throw home in an attempt to get DiCristofaro out. Richardson moved to third on the throw and scored when the catcher's throw to third sailed into the outfield.

In the top of the seventh, Sarah Stibaner singled up the middle with one out. The Golden Grizzlies got great defensive plays from Zimmerman and freshman Brittany Prior to close out the game.

For Oakland, Richardson was 2-for-4, had two doubles and drove in three runs and DiCristofaro scored three runs and had a double. Freshman Bailee Braunreuther (1-1) gave up seven hits, six runs, only one earned and struck out three in seven innings.

For Toledo, Ernst was 2-for-4 while Keri Gallagher and Courtney McCarthy scored two runs each. Whitney Young (3-19) gave up six hits, seven runs, all earned, walked two and struck out four in 5.2 innings.
