ROCHESTER, Mich. - Senior Marisa Everitt (6-8) threw a no-hitter for 5.1 innings and junior Brittany Doyle (5-8) scattered five hits and just one run as the Oakland University softball team (14-26, 7-13 Summit) swept the league leader IPFW (25-12-1, 13-7 Summit) 3-2, 5-1 Friday afternoon at the OU Softball Field.
"I'm very proud of the team today," said head coach LaDonia Hughes. "We battled every single inning that we played today. Marissa and Brittany threw very well out there today. We were aggressive at the plate right from the first at-bats and stayed that way. We made the defensive plays when we needed to. We need to go out tomorrow, play the same way and finish out the series."
In the first inning, Sarah Swanson drew a walk, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. Everitt got a strike out and a fly out to strand Swanson at third.
In the sixth with one out, Rachel Staschuck singled to left, breaking up the no-hitter. She was replaced by Sara Jacobson who stole second. Sarah Swanson drew a walk.
Ashleigh Bousquet singled to right field and freshman Shelby Gott made a strike to the plate. Freshman Erika Polidori caught the throw and tagged Jacobson out at the plate.
On the next pitch, Bousquet stole second and Swanson advance to home on the throw to second. Courtney Cronin doubled to center field to score Bousquet. That made it 2-0 IPFW.
In the bottom of the sixth, senior Alyssa Deacon led off with a bunt single. Sophomore Erin Galloway beat out a fielder's choice followed by a single from Polidori to load the bases. Junior Kylie Schalz hit a grounder that was misplayed allowing Deacon to score.
Junior Leah DiCristofaro drew a walk to score Galloway. Sophomore Abbie Richardson hit a fielder's choice that scored Polidori to make it 3-2.
In the seventh, Kristina Karpun doubled to left field and was replaced by Kaylee Faurote. Oakland struck out two batters but a walk and pass ball put runners on the corners. Staschuck drew a walk to load the bases but Everitt fired three strikes past Swanson to end the game.
or Oakland, the Golden Grizzlies had six players with one hit each. Everitt (6-8) gave up four hits, two runs, walked five and struck out nine in seven innings.
For IPFW, Cronin and Karpun each had a double. Cronin (16-8) gave up six hits, three runs, two earned, walked one and struck out five in six innings.
In the nightcap, Oakland went on the attack in the second inning. With one out, Everitt and Gott both dropped in singles. Freshman Alyssa Shriver was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Freshman Megan McQueen lined a double down the right field line that cleared the bases to make it 3-0. Galloway then ripped a double off the left field fence to score McQueen.
IPFW would use three hits to score a run in the top of the third.
In the bottom half of the stanza, Schlaz doubled to center field and was replaced by pinch runner, freshman Alivia Nikolaus. Nikolaus moved to second on a ground out and scored on a single up the middle from Gott.
For Oakland, Gott was 3-for-3, Galloway and Everitt had two hits each and McQueen had a double and drove in three runs. Doyle (5-8) gave up five hits, one run, walked two and struck out five in seven innings.
For IPFW, Staschuk (6-4) gave up four hits and four runs in 1.2 innings.
Oakland will remain at home, Saturday, April 30 to take on IPFW. The game, which is senior day, is scheduled to start at noon. Live Stats will be available at www.ougrizzlies.com.
