ROCHESTER, Mich. - Junior Tim Ryan and senior Ryan Waldhart were both 2-for-4, but Oakland University (4-12) dropped its home opener 6-3 at the hands of Rochester College (9-6) on Friday at the OU Baseball Field. The Golden Grizzlies hit into four double plays over the first five innings.
Down 5-0, the Golden Grizzlies rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth. Sophomore Mike Carson doubled to lead off the inning, and then Waldhardt walked to put two on with no outs. The Golden Grizzlies hit into their final double play of the game before senior Eric Ogg was able to stroke an RBI double to get OU on the board. Two batters later, Ogg came in to score on a single up the middle by senior D.J. Jarrad.
Oakland scored again in the seventh inning when Ryan singled and then got caught in a run down to allow sophomore Nolan Jacoby to score, making it 6-3. Ogg, who bunted Jacoby into scoring position, finished the day a perfect 1-for-1 with a walk. Ryan is now leading with a .328 average for the season.
Rochester College scored four runs to take the lead in the fourth inning. The Warriors pieced together five hits in the frame with two RBIs coming from bunts. The Golden Grizzlies were able to put runners on base early in the game, but failed to take advantage of their opportunities.
The Warriors added a key insurance run in the top of the sixth when Eric Ramirez hit a bunt single to score Nathan Billings on a squeeze play. Billings and David Woodson both went 3-for-5 to lead a Rochester College team that outhit OU 15-9.
Hunter Reams (2-0) picked up the win for Rochester College by scattering six hits over five innings. Junior Greg Welke (1-4) took the loss for OU, despite striking out four batters over 4.1 innings of work. Welke allowed five earned runs on eight hits.
Oakland will get back into action with a recently-scheduled game at Bowling Green on Wednesday at 1 p.m..
