CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior Amanda Pettey won in singles as the Oakland University women's tennis team (1-4) lost 6-1 to Cleveland State (4-8), Sunday afternoon.
Last year, the Golden Grizzlies lost 7-0 to the Vikings and took just 16 games and were shutout four times in singles. Today, OU won 28 games with no shutouts.
"It was disappointing with the way we had been playing this year," said head coach Heather Redshaw. "It was a more competitive match than last year. Amanda (Pettey) had to battle back to win and showed a good effort. Karen (Karoub) played well in her singles match and she and Demi (Georgakopoulos) gave a solid effort in doubles."
At No. 6 singles, Pettey took the first set from Sanda Bjelan 6-2 and lost the second set 6-2. Pettey then rallied to win the tiebreaker and the point, 10-8. Junior Karen Karoub lost a hard fought battle at No. 3 singles 7-5, 7-5 to Nicole Janek.
At No. 2 doubles, the team of junior Demi Georgakopoulos and Karoub battled all the way through. They were on the short end of an 8-6 score to Bjelan and Catrine Bjerrehus. Cleveland State took No. 1 and 3 doubles by an 8-1 score to take the doubles point.
Oakland is off until Mar. 16 when they travel to Las Vegas to play Long Island. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
