YPSILANTI, Mich. - Seniors Mark Leichtman and Aaron Wick combined to strike out six batters as the Oakland University baseball team (2-9) lost a tough one to Michigan (5-12) 2-1, Saturday afternoon in the Oestrike Classic at Oestrike Stadium.
Michigan struck first in the top of the third. Garrett Stephens and Zach Johnson singled and advanced one base on a ground out. Patrick Biondi singled down the first base line to score Stephens and move Johnson to third. Senior Dan Gliot made a running catch of a line drive, and then threw to first, picking off Biondi for the double play.
In the bottom of the third, junior Tim Ryan cracked a double down the left field line. Senior D.J. Jarrad laid down a bunt single, moving Ryan to third. Junior Aaron Cieslak lifted a deep fly to centerfield, which allowed Ryan to score.
In the seventh inning, the Wolverines loaded the bases and got a ground out to score what would be the winning run.
Cieslak was 1-for-2 and drove in a run while Jarrad stole two bases. Wick (1-3) gave up six hits, two runs and struck out three in six innings. Leichtman came on in relief giving up two hits and striking out three in three innings.
For Michigan, Derek Dennis went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Bobby Brosnahan (1-4) gave up five hits, one run and struck out four in 7.1 innings. Alex Lakatos struck out two batters in 1.2 innings for his first save of the season.
Oakland will take on Alma, Sunday, March 19, in Ypsilanti, Mich. The game is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Live stats will be available at www.ougrizzlies.com.
