YPSILANTI, Mich. - Junior Aaron Cieslak went 2-for-4 and senior Ryan Waldhart stole two bases as the Oakland University baseball team (2-8) fell short, 4-3 to Eastern Michigan (10-6) , Friday evening in the Oestrike Classic at Oestrike Stadium.
"This team never quits and that is a quality all championship teams possess," said head coach John Musachio. "We just need to focus on getting better each day"
Trailing 3-0 after seven innings, the Golden Grizzlies began their comeback attempt in the eighth. Senior D.J. Jarrad drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a ground out. Following a fly out, sophomore Mike Carson tattooed a shot to left center field for a double, scoring Jarrad.
In the top of the ninth, Oakland had Waldhart and junior Tim Ryan on base with walks and two outs. Both runners advanced one base on a wild pitch. Jarrad then lined a single to right field to score Waldhart and Ryan to tie the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the ninth, Wally Gerbus doubled to left center field and moved to third on a ground out. A wild pitch allowed Gerbus to score, ending the game.
The Eagles got a solo home run from Lee Longo in the second inning to score first. EMU would add two more in the fifth.
Cieslak had two hits including a double and Jarrad drove in two runs. Junior Jeff Gorecki (0-1) gave up three hits, one run and struck out five in 3.2 innings.
For Eastern Michigan, Long went 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in two runs. Joe Battistelli (2-1) gave up one hit in 0.1 innings to record the win.
Oakland will take on Michigan, Saturday, March 19, in Ypsilanti, Mich. The game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
