Oakland Splits With Dayton on the Road

DAYTON, Ohio - Senior Dan Gliot stole three bases and junior D.J. Jarrad went 3-for-4 as Oakland University (2-7) split with Dayton (7-8) on Sunday at TWC Stadium. The Golden Grizzlies won the opener 3-2 and dropped the nightcap 3-2 in 11 innings.

"I am very pleased with the way we competed today," said head coach John Musachio. "Aaron Wick and Russell Luxton gave us two quality starts and our bullpen pitched very well. Offensively we had some chances, but Dayton made some big plays to keep us from having any big innings."

The Golden Grizzlies took the lead in the top of the seventh when sophomore Mike Carson hit into a double play that allowed junior Aaron Cieslak to cross the plate. The Golden Grizzlies added a key insurance run in the eighth inning. Gliot reached on an error then stole second and third. He came in to score on a ground out by senior Tim Ryan, giving OU a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth the Flyers threatened with bases loaded and one out. Korkate got a strike out and a fly out to get out of the inning. Dayton scored a run in the bottom of the ninth and threatened to tie the game.

Oakland intentionally walked Bobby Glover to load the bases. Zach Stewart hit a grounder back to Korkate, who started a 1-2-3 double play to end the game.

Oakland got things started in its first inning when junior Tim Ryan singled to lead off the game. He eventually came in to score on sacrifice fly by senior Tommy Jablonski.

Dayton tied the game in the fourth when C.J. Gillman laced a double to left center field. Danny Welch singled through the left side to score Gillman.

Gliot's three stolen bases tied the OU NCAA Division I record. Wick (1-2) gave up three hits and one run, while striking out four batters in 6.1 innings. Korkate (2) picked up the save after allowing three hits, one run, and striking out two in 2.2 innings.

For Dayton, Welch led the offense with two hits. Burny Mitchem (0-1) gave up four hits, three runs with one earned, walked two and struck out seven in eight innings of work.

In the nightcap, Dayton drew first blood scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning.

In the top of the third, junior John Estes walked and moved to third on a sharp double to left field by Ryan. Estes would score on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by senior D.J. Jarrad.

The Golden Grizzlies would tie the game in the top of the fifth as Jarrad scored on a single through the right side by senior Tommy Jablonski.

Dayton would score in the bottom of the 11th to take the win.

Jarrad led the Golden Grizzlies offense with three hits while Carson and Ryan added two hits each. Junior Brad Pascoe (0-1) gave one hit and one run in 1 inning of work.

For Dayton, Joe Gayda and Gillman had three hits apiece. Bryce Lahrman (1-1) gave up no hits and struck out three in two innings of work.

Oakland is back in action, Friday, March 18, when they travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. to take on Eastern Michigan. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
