MACOMB, Ill. - Senior Marisa Everitt and junior Kylie Schalz had two hits each as the Oakland University softball team (4-11, 0-1 Summit) fell 5-2 to Western Illinois (3-8, 1-0 Summit) Friday afternoon at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.
The Lady Leathernecks were ahead 10-1 in game two, before play was stopped in the bottom of the fourth due to darkness. The teams will finish the delayed game at noon on Sunday before the teams play the final game of the series.
"Each game we play, we get closer to our goal," said Oakland head coach LaDonia Hughes. "We were very aggressive at the plate throughout both games. That is something that hadn't been happening. We just need to cut down on mental mistakes and stay positive."
In the bottom of the first, Nikki Marinec and Colleen Biebel singled and moved one base each on two errors. Beth Golitko singled to drive in both runners for a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Schalz laced a double down the left field line. Schalz was caught stealing and sophomore Dani Dulberg singled thru the right side. Everitt singled but the Leathernecks got two outs to end the inning.
In the third inning, freshman Shelby Gott singled and was forced out on a fielder's choice by freshman Alyssa Shriver. Shriver moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a line drive double to left by freshman Erika Polidori.
In the fourth Megan Kelly doubled to right and was replaced by pinch runner Brianna Williams. Following an out, Erin Schlotfeldt doubled to left to drive in Williams. Anna Copeland came in to run and moved to third on a single by Anna Copeland. A fielder's choice to Michelle Prieto loaded the bases. OU got two ground outs to escape the inning.
In the fifth, Golitko singled and stole second. An error and walk loaded the bases for WIU. The Leathernecks singled up the middle to drive in two runs.
In the sixth, Polidori walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. A ground out moved Polidori to third and she scored on a single by Schalz. WIU loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Everitt struck out a batter and then the Golden Grizzlies turned a double play to end the inning.
For Oakland, Schalz and Everitt had two hits each. Junior Brittany Doyle (2-4) gave up eight hits, five runs, three earned and walked two in 4.1 innings of work.
For Western Illinois, Golitko went 2-for-3 while Michelini drove in two runs. Michelini (1-4) gave up seven hits, two runs and struck out one in 5.1 innings for the win.
In the nightcap, Biebel singled, stole second and scored off a single from Jamie Goss. In the top of the second, freshman Megan McQueen singled and Shriver reached on an error. Following an out, a ground out moved the runners on base. Prieto made a great catch down the left field line to end the inning.
In the third, Western Illinois used three hits, three walks and an error to score four runs. In the fourth, Everitt reached on a fielder's choice. A walk to freshman Shannon Cleveland and a single by Dulberg loaded the bases. WIU forced a fielder's choice for the second out but junior Leah DiCristofaro scored Cleveland.
WIU scored five runs in the bottom of fourth before the game was called due to darkness.
