SPARTANBURG, S.C. -The Oakland University softball team (4-7) fell to USC Upstate (14-0) 5-0, Saturday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium.
"Today was just a bump in the road," said head coach LaDonia Hughes. "We are going to have our ups and downs as the season goes on. Today was one of our down days. We'll just work hard at turning it around this afternoon."
In the bottom of the second for USC Upstate, Cheyanna Ohlrich doubled to left field and moved to third on an error. Junior Brittany Doyle got a strike out, foul out and ground out to end the inning.
In the third inning, a single, error and stolen base put Janna Lewis at third and Lindsay Kelly at second. Following a ground out, Ericka Harris doubled to center field to clear the bases. The Spartans would score one more run to make it 3-0.
In the fifth inning, sophomore Erin Galloway reached first on an error to break up the perfect game. Senior Marisa Everitt double to center field to ruin the no-hitter. Upstate got a fly out and a strikeout to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth with one out, the Spartans got doubles from Harris and Katie Zauner to score a run. The Spartans would score once in the sixth for the final tally.
For Oakland, Doyle (2-3) gave up eight hits, five runs, two earned and struck out one in six innings.
For USC Upstate, Harris, Lewis and Zauner had two hits each. Morgan Childers (10-0) threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts.
