SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Junior Kelsey Krych went 3-for-4, freshman Shannon Cleveland had a two-run home run and sophomore Erin Galloway had two hits including a game-winning two RBI double as the Oakland University softball team (3-6) rallied to beat LaSalle (0-1) 4-3, Friday morning at Cyrill Stadium.
"It was a good comeback," said head coach LaDonia Hughes. "The team is starting to come into their own. We battled from the first inning all the way to the end. I was pleased that once we gave up the lead, we were able to scored in the seventh and then shut them down."
In the fourth inning, LaSalle drew walks to Ali Shepherd and DJ Guinn. Junior Brittany Doyle got a strikeout and gave up a single to Megan Hodgson to load the bases. Jackie McBride singled through the left side to drive in a run. Doyle got a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, senior Alyssa Deacon singled up the middle followed by a single to left field from Krych. LaSalle got a fly out and a strikeout to end the threat.
In the sixth inning, Galloway singled and moved to second on a ground out. Cleveland blasted the ball over the left field fence to make it 2-1, Oakland. In the bottom of the sixth, LaSalle got singles from Shannon Skomorucha and Hodgson and a walk to McBride to load the bases. Following a strikeout, the Explorers scored twice on a hit and an error to take a 3-2 lead.
In the seventh, Krych singled up the middle and moved to third on a bloop single from junior Kylie Schalz. Freshman Shelby Gott came in to run for Schalz. Galloway then ripped a double to left centerfield to drive in Krych and Gott. In the seventh, the Explorers went 1-2-3 to end the game.
For Oakland, Galloway went 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in two runs, Schalz went 2-for-4 with a double and Cleveland went 1-for-3. Doyle (2-2) gave up eight hits, three runs, two earned, walked three and struck out six in throwing the complete game.
For LaSalle, Heather Brabazon went 2-for-4 while Hodgson and McBride had two hits each. Guinn (0-1) gave up nine hits, four runs and struck out four in seven innings.
Oakland will take on Lafayette at 6 p.m. tonight to lose out the first day of the Campus Suites Spartan Classic. Live Stats are available at www.oakland.edu.
