ROCHESTER, Mich. - Laval Lucas-Perry scored a career-high 21 points and Corey Petros recorded his third double-double of the season with a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead Oakland (6-2, 2-0) to an 86-73 victory over UMKC (4-5, 1-1) on Saturday in Summit League men's basketball action inside the Athletics Center O'rena.
"I was pleased with the effort and how they played, because this is our fifth game in nine days, which is like an NBA schedule, and that's coming off a 10-day road trip," said OU coach Greg Kampe.
The Golden Grizzlies have now won 31 straight games at home versus league opponents and push their season winning streak to six. OU is riding an 11-game home court winning streak and posted its 11th straight win over the Kangaroos.
"We are 2-0 in the league and 6-2 overall which is our best start in the Division I era," said Kampe. "The reason that's a great start is because who we play. We played Alabama, Arkansas, Houston, and Tennessee, so we are very pleased with the start."
Reggie Hamilton scored 18 points and dished out a game-high six assists, while Drew Valentine tallied 13 points and a game-high three steals for the Grizzlies. Reggie Chamberlain led all scorers with 30 points for the Kangaroos.
Travis Bader knocked down a 3-pointer six minutes in to the first half that sparked a 10-0 run as the Golden Grizzlies led 22-12. OU pushed the lead all the way to 14 and led by 11 at the half, 47-36.
The lead grew to 15 points early on in the second half, but the Kangaroos fought back to within six points, 62-56, on a dunk by Fred Chatmon at the 10:05 minute mark. The Golden Grizzlies responded with six straight points and kept a double-digit lead for the remaining of the game.
OU will step back out of conference play with a home game against Ohio University (5-1) on Wednesday night inside the O'rena. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. and tickets are available at OUgrizzlies.com.
