ROCHESTER, Mich. - Drew Valentine recorded a double-double with 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, while Laval Lucas-Perry scored a career-high 23 points and career-best eight rebounds to lead Oakland (7-4) past pesky Rochester College (9-6), 77-62, on Tuesday night inside the Athletics Center O'rena. The Golden Grizzlies picked up their 125th win all-time inside the O'rena.
"I've been around a long time like many of you know and I've learned a long time ago that all wins are good," said OU coach Greg Kampe. "So I am pleased with the win and I would like to credit Rochester College on an outstanding basketball game. For them to come in here and do the things they did, you have to pat Klint Pleasant on the back and say he did an outstanding job. I think they played harder than we did."
Reggie Hamilton tallied 14 points and three steals and Corey Petros added 13 points to round out double-figure scorers for the Grizzlies. The Warriors were led by Dramel Hogan's game-high 25 points and Brad Norman's 19 points.
Oakland trailed by eight points early, 11-3, but responded with a 19-10 run to take its first lead, 22-21, on a steal and finish by Lucas-Perry at 11:07. The Golden Grizzlies extended the lead to six points on two different occasions in the first half and led by four at the break, 41-37.
The Warriors hung tough through the opening 10 minutes of the second half, but the Golden Grizzlies grabbed a 10-point lead, 60-50, with under eight minutes left in the game. Oakland advanced its lead to 16 points with just over three minutes left and went on to win by 15.
The Golden Grizzlies went just 1 of 13 from beyond the arc in the second half and 5-for-23 in the game. OU forced 21 turnovers and outscored the Warriors 42-18 in the paint.
OU will hit the road for two games at Valparaiso on Saturday, Dec. 17 and at Arizona on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Both games will air on OU's flagship station WDFN-AM (1130) with Mario Impemba (play-by-play) and Neal Ruhl (color) and the Arizona game will be televised on FS Detroit Plus.
