HOUSTON - Reggie Hamilton and Corey Petros each scored 16 points to lead a charge of four Oakland players in double figures as the Golden Grizzlies (2-2) defeated Houston (3-1), 76-74, in Hofheinz Pavilion on Tuesday night. OU had 22 assists on 26 field goals and outrebounded the Cougars 37-35.
"We won tonight and didn't shoot the ball very well," said OU coach Greg Kampe. "We won because of our defense and rebounding."
Also in double figures for Oakland were Drew Valentine and Laval Lucas-Perry as they both scored 15 points. Petros grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, while Travis Bader dished out a career-high six assists.
Houston was led by Kirk Van Slyke with a game-high 28 points off the bench. Reigning Conference USA Player of the Week Alandise Harris finished with 21, 15 of those coming in the second half.
The Golden Grizzlies and Cougars played an up-and-down game as Houston jumped out in front 15-6 in the first seven minutes. OU responded with a run of its own, outscoring the Cougars 28-12 over the next nine minutes and led by just four at the half, 43-39.
OU led for most of the second half, but Houston took its only lead with 12:33 left in the game, 55-53. The Golden Grizzlies quickly regained the lead on back-to-back baskets by Petros. With the Golden Grizzlies up one, 65-64, and 2:30 left on the clock, Bader drilled a 3-pointer after Lucas-Perry grabbed a big offensive rebound as the lead grew to four points, 68-64.
The Grizzlies then went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line over the final 32 seconds to hold on for the two-point victory. OU finished the game 18-for-21 (86 percent) from the charity stripe.
Oakland will begin a seven-game homestand on Friday against Utah Valley inside the Athletics Center O'rena. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
