ROCHESTER, Mich. - It is a special opportunity for a collegiate athlete to have the chance to get tips from a professional athlete. That's exactly what happened for the Oakland University baseball team, when Detroit Lions kicker, Jason Hanson, came to the school to speak to the team.
"It was a thrill and an honor to have Jason Hanson speak to our team," said OU head coach John Musachio. "He is one of the best kickers in the NFL and a top-notch human being."
Hanson discussed a host of topics with the Oakland players, including concentration, professionalism and balancing work and home life. The players also got a chance to ask questions about Hanson's preparation for games and other aspects of being an NFL player.
"I think one of the most important things for me is to have a routine," said Hanson while addressing the players. "Sometimes your routine can help you avoid getting caught up in the pressure of the moment."
This advice resonated with the baseball players who, like Hanson, spend long hours at practice and are called on to perform at their peak in key instances throughout the game. Pitchers also appreciated Hanson's advice about consistent performance.
Hanson is a 19-year NFL veteran and has spent his entire career with the Detroit Lions, the last four as team captain. He has converted 81.9 percent of his field goal attempts, making 163 attempts from 40 yards or more. He has also converted 573 extra points and is the Lions' all-time scoring leader with 1890 points.
"Hearing Jason speak was a wonderful opportunity for our young men," concluded Musachio.
The Golden Grizzlies begin the baseball season with a three-game series at No. 5 Oklahoma on Feb. 25-27. The team's first home game is on Mar. 29 against Western Michigan.
