FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Seniors Katie Dreyer and Erica Lozon each drove in a run for the Black and Gold, but it wasn't enough as the Oakland University softball team (17-37, 7-16 Summit League) fell by scores of 8-1 and 4-1 in a doubleheader to IPFW (28-17, 17-6 Summit League) Sunday afternoon at the IPFW Softball Field.
The Golden Grizzlies struck first in the early game when a single to the pitcher by Lozon drove in a run in the top of the second inning to put OU at an early 1-0 advantage. The Mastodons would tie up the score in the bottom of the inning by a catcher's throwing error, while a costly wild pitch and dropped ball in the outfield would give IPFW a 3-1 lead after three innings.
A five-run blitz throughout the fourth and fifth innings, including a solo shot home run by Kristina Karpun in the fourth and a three singles in the fifth, ran the score up to what would be its final 8-1 score. The Golden Grizzlies looked to tack on some runs in the sixth with two runners on and one out. But IPFW's pitcher forced a pop up and a groundout to retire the side and proceeded to conduct a one-two-three inning to secure the 8-1 victory.
Sophomore Brittany Doyle (9-16) was charged with the loss after allowing eight runs, six unearned, and 13 hits, as well as fanning four batters. Courtney Cronin (18-9) picked up the win, scattering three hits, one earned run and striking out four batters. OU scored one run off three hits and committed two errors, while IPFW scored eight runs off 13 hits with no errors.
In game two, it was the Mastodons who jumped out to an early lead, when Karpun notched her second home run of the day, a two-RBI shot to center field to take a 2-0 lead. The ball left the yard once again for IPFW in the sixth when Cronin drove in two runs with a homer to left field to bring the score to 4-0.
Oakland appeared to have a rally going in the seventh inning when Dreyer singled bring home senior Ashley Sullivan to bring the score to 4-1 with no outs. But two strikeouts and a pop out ended the Oakland threat and left the game at its 4-1 final score.
Junior Marisa Everitt (5-13) was the pitcher of record, allowing four hits and four runs, all of them earned, as well as striking out six batters. Rachel Staschuk (7-3) was the winning pitcher, scattering three hits and one earned run, and fanning nine batters. Oakland scored one run off three hits and committed one error, while IPFW scored four runs off seven hits with no errors.
With the conclusion of this series, the Golden Grizzlies have wrapped up the 2010 season, finishing with a 17-37 overall record and picking up a 7-14 mark in league play.
