DETROIT - Sophomore Kylie Schalz recorded two home runs, including her first career grand slam in the sixth inning of game one, as the Oakland University softball team (16-32, 7-11 Summit) defeated Detroit (3-36, 0-21 Horizon League) by scores of 6-2 and 5-0Tuesday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark.
The Titans struck first in the first inning Stefanie Marong was able to steal home for an early 1-0 lead. Oakland bounced right back when senior Haley Emerson crushed a solo shot home run to centerfield to knot the game up at 1-1.
Oakland found themselves in an opportune chance to put up some runs when they loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning with no outs. Emerson brought in one run after being walked to advance the score to 2-1, then sophomore Kylie Schalz hit her first career grand slam to right center to clear the bases and give Oakland a 6-1 advantage. OU got on more runner on when senior Katie Dreyer was hit by a pitch, but the Titans were able to retire the side to leave the score at 6-1.
Katie Schaus hit a solo home run to center field to narrow the gap to a 6-2 Oakland lead. But junior Alison Tansel forced two groundouts and a strikeout to end the threat and leave the score at a 6-2 Oakland victory.
Tansel (2-8) picked up the win, scattering two hits and two runs, both earned, with five strikeouts. Kara Spinelli (1-14) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs, four of them earned, and fanning six batters. The Golden Grizzlies scored six runs off five hits and committed one error, while Detroit scored two runs off six hits with two errors.
Schalz got the Golden Grizzlies rolling in the first inning of game two when she blasted her second home run of the day to left field to drive in three runs for an early 3-0 lead. OU notched another run in the top of the second when, after stealing third base, Ashley Sullivan was brought home by a bunt by junior Alyssa Deacon to make the score 4-0.
Junior Marisa Everitt added to the lead when she notched a double to center field in the top of the third inning to drive in Emerson and make the score 5-0. The game produced no runs for the remaining innings to leave the game at its 5-0 final score.
Brittany Doyle (10-14) picked up the win, as well as her second shutout on the season, scattering four hits and striking out six batters in all seven innings of work. Anna Bondy (2-16) was charged with the loss, allowing five runs, all of them earned, and fanning six batters. Oakland scored five runs off six hits and committed one error, while Detroit scored no runs off four hits with no errors.
The Golden Grizzlies will conclude regular season play when they hit the road for a league series against UMKC on Friday-Saturday, May 7-8. First pitch on Friday is slated for 4 p.m. EST.
