ROCHESTER, Mich. - Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Teague (5-6) struck out six in 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs, while junior Tommy Jablonski and sophomore Aaron Cieslak each had two hits as the Oakland University (17-30, 8-12) dropped a 14-3 Summit League baseball game to IPFW (13-35, 9-12) on Friday at the OU Baseball Field.
"Our goal coming into this weekend was to win the series and we can still do that," said OU coach John Musachio.
IPFW's A.J. Christensen led the offensive charge for the Mastodons, going 3-for-6, with two home runs and seven runs batted in. Right-handed pitcher Matt Antos (3-6) got the win on the mound, throwing 6.1 strong innings, scattering five hits, three earned runs and struck out five. Right-handed relief pitcher Matt Ransbottom allowed just one hit over 2.2 scoreless innings.
Sophomore Connor Mielock drove in a run for the Golden Grizzlies, finishing the afternoon 1-for-2, reaching base for the first time on a hit-by-pitch. Freshman Mike Carson had the only other hit for Oakland.
The Mastodons got on top early with two unearned runs in the first inning courtesy of a two-out bases loaded single by Brett Clark. The Golden Grizzlies scratched a run across in the third inning as Cieslak drove in junior D.J. Jarrad as the score advanced to 2-1.
After two runs in the fourth inning for IPFW, the Mastodons tacked on four more in the sixth inning on back-to-back home runs by Christensen, three-run homer, and Shaun VanDriessche, solo, to increase the lead to seven, 8-1.
OU pushed two runs across in the seventh inning to get within five runs, 8-3. Cieslak reached on an infield single and Carson doubled to right-center field to plate Cieslak. Carson scored on a two-out base hit to left field by Mielock.
The Mastodons would score three runs in the eighth inning and three more in the ninth inning, highlighted by RBI singles off the bat of Christensen and Clark as Oakland went on to fall by 11.
IPFW scored 14 runs, on 18 hits and committed two errors, while OU had three runs, six hits and one error.
