ROCHESTER, Mich. - Sophomore Tim Ryan went 4-for-5 and scored three runs and junior Ryan Waldhart was 2-for-3, scored three runs and drove in three runs as the Oakland University baseball team (10-24) edged Central Michigan (23-16) 10-9 at the OU Baseball Field Wednesday afternoon.
Ryan led off the game with a double down the right field line and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. A ground out from sophomore Aaron Cieslak scored Ryan to make it 1-0. Central Michigan would counter with a three-run homer in the second.
In the bottom of the third, Ryan singled up the middle and stole second. Waldhart blasted a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence to tie the game at 3-3. Freshman Mike Carson drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Junior D.J. Jarrad ripped a single to left center field to score Carson. The Chippewas would score three runs in the fifth to take the lead back, 6-4.
In the bottom of the fifth, Waldhart walked and Cieslak singled through the left side. Carson hit a ground ball that CMU used to force Cieslak out. The Chippewas tried to turn the double but the first baseman misplayed the ball allowing Waldhart to score and Carson to move to second.
Jarrad crushed a double down the right field line to score Carson. Jarrad stole third and freshman Jake Richardson drew a walk. Junior Dan Gliot bounced one through the left side to score Jarrad. Central Michigan scored one run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to take the lead at 9-7.
In the eighth inning, Gliot's ground ball was misplayed and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ryan dropped in a single to left field to move Gliot to third. Waldhart hit a shot up the middle that pushed Ryan to third and scored Gliot. Ryan scored on a passed ball.
Carson struck out swinging, however, the catcher dropped the third strike and then threw the ball over the head of the first baseman. Carson ended up at third and Waldhart scored to make it 10-9.
Jarrad went 2-for-5, had a double and drove in two runs while freshman Todd Dunham went 2-for-4. Freshman Hayden Fox (1-0) gave up one hit and walked one batter in 1/3rd of an inning to get the win. Junior Mark Leichtman gave up one hit and struck out two in the ninth for his fourth save of the year.
For Central Michigan, Nate Theunissen went 3-for-4 and scored three runs while James Teas was 3-for-3 and drove in two runs. Zach Cooper (2-2) gave up two hits, three runs, none of them earned and struck out three batters in one inning of work.
Oakland hits the road for a four game series against Western Illinois, Fri.-Sun., Apr. 30, May 1-2. The game on Friday is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
