ROCHESTER, Mich. - Sophomores Aaron Cieslak hit a two run home run and Tim Ryan went 3-for-4 as the Oakland University baseball team (8-22) got its revenge beating Toledo (21-14) 5-3 at the OU Baseball Field Tuesday afternoon. The Rockets had beaten OU in Toledo earlier in the season.
"We gave a solid all-around effort today," said head coach John Musachio. "We pitched well, played good defense and executed offensively. Aaron Wick gave us a starting effort that we needed. Our bullpen did a great job as well as Jake Arendsen, Kevin Korkate and Russ Luxton all did what they were suppose to."
Oakland opened up the first inning with singles from Ryan, junior Ryan Waldhart and Cieslak. Junior Aaron Wick singled up the middle to move all the runners around scoring Ryan. Freshman Mike Carson lifted a deep fly to center field to score Waldhart.
In the second inning, senior Brett Geschke drew a walk with one out. Ryan then laid down a bunt single. The ball was misplayed allowing Geschke to score. Ryan was thrown out at third on the play. Wick singled to center field and came home on a home run by Cieslak.
Toledo would score three runs off of five hits in the top of the sixth to close the gap to 5-3. The Rockets threatened in the ninth with a runner out and two outs. Waldhart made a great play on a ground ball to third to end the game.
Cieslak went 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in two runs, Wick was 2-for-4 and drove in a run while Waldhart scored twice. Wick (1-3) gave up seven hits, three runs, all of them earned, walked two and struck out three batters in five and 2/3rd innings. Freshman Russell Luxton gave up one hit and struck out three batters in two innings to pick up his first career save.
For Toledo, Chris Dudics was 3-for-5 while Aaron Dudley and Tim Krofcheck had two hits each. Cody Umbright (2-2) gave up seven hits, five runs, all of them earned, walked one and struck out one in one and 2/3rd innings.
