Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Sophomore Matt LaMothe threw eight innings of no-hit ball and junior Ryan Waldhart went 2-for-5, drove in three runs and had two doubles as the Oakland University baseball team (1-3) defeated Memphis (2-6) 6-4 Friday night.

"This is a huge win for our program." said head coach John Musachio. "We were committed to playing hard; playing aggressive and playing with enthusiasm and that is what we did tonight. We showed a lot of mental toughness, scoring five runs with two outs in the third. Matt LaMothe pitched a brilliant game tonight."

In the top of the third with two outs, Oakland put on a display. Sophomore Tim Ryan singled and then stole second. Junior D.J. Jarrad hit a grounder that was misplayed by the infield allowing Ryan to move to third. Junior Tommy Jablonski singled through the right side to move Jarrad to third and score Ryan.

Sophomore Aaron Cieslak singled through the left side to move Jablonski to second and plate Jarrad. Waldhart laced a double down the left field line to score Jablonski and Cieslak. A single from freshman Mike Carson scored Waldhart to make it 5-0.

The Golden Grizzlies added a run in the seventh when Waldhart doubled again to score Cieslak and make it 6-0. Memphis broke up the no-hitter in the top of the ninth when their leadoff hitter tripled. The Tigers would score four runs on four hits to close the gap to 6-4. With a runner on second and two outs, junior Mark Leichtman struck out Zach Helton to end the game.

Jablonski finished the night with three hits in five at bats, Cieslak and Ryan had two hits each and junior Dan Gliot stole two bases. La Mothe (1-1) gave up two hits, three runs, all earned, walked three batters and struck out five in eight and 2/3rd innings of work.

Oakland will take on Memphis, Saturday, Mar. 6. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
