EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomores Aaron Cieslak, Connor Mielock and Tim Ryan had two hits each as the Oakland University baseball team (3-11) lost a tough one, 4-2 to Michigan State (14-4) Saturday afternoon at McLane Stadium.
Michigan State used four hits to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning. In the fifth inning, Mielock singled through the right side. Following a strike out, Ryan singled through the right side with Mielock going to third. The Spartans got a fielder's choice to get out of the inning.
In the seventh inning, freshman Mike Carson hit a grounder that was misplayed by the MSU infield. Following a fly out, singles by Mielock and sophomore John Estes loaded the bases for the Golden Grizzlies. Ryan lifted a deep fly to left field that allowed Carson to score and make it 4-1, Spartans.
In the eighth inning with one out, Cieslak hit a solo shot just to the right of the scoreboard. It was his first home run of the season.
In the ninth inning, Oakland mounted a threat. Mielock reached first on a passed ball and was replaced by junior Dan Gliot on the bases. Gliot moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a ground out. MSU got a strikeout to end the game.
Cieslak and Ryan each had two hits and drove in a run. In addition to his home run, Cieslak also had a double on the day. Junior Aaron Wick (0-1) gave up seven hits, four runs, walked two batters and struck out a batter in five innings of work. Freshman Russell Luxton gave up just one hit and struck out three batters in three innings of scoreless relief ball.
Oakland closes out the doubleheader today at 3:05 p.m.
