Oakland Falls Twice at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. - Junior Alyssa Deacon, senior Katie Dreyer and junior Danielle Peters had two hits each as the Oakland University softball team (8-18) lost 12-1 to Scared Heart (8-8) and 3-2 to Coastal Carolina (12-13) on the second day of the CCU Softball Classic.

In game 1, Sacred Heart used three hits and seven errors to score nine runs over the first two innings. In the bottom of the second, sophomore Leah DiCristofaro singled up the middle and was replaced on the bases by senior Angela Cicchini.

Junior Alyssa Deacon singled through the left side, then Cicchini stole third. Freshman Ali Nikolaus hit a deep fly to centerfield to score Cicchini. The Pioneers scored three more runs to enforce the run rule.

Sophomore Brittany Doyle (5-9) gave up eight hits, 12 runs, two of them earned, walked two batters and struck out three.

"I'm very proud of the way the team fought against Coastal Carolina," said assistant coach Jane Zimmerman. "They never gave up in the field and hit the ball hard."

In the second game, the Golden Grizzlies struck in their first at-bat. With two outs, senior Katie Dreyer doubled to right center field. Senior Haley Emerson then laced a double down the left field line to score Dreyer.

In the bottom of the second, Coastal Carolina used two hits and a walk to score a run. In the bottom of the fifth, the Chanticleers hit a two run shot to forge ahead 3-1.

In the seventh inning with two outs, freshman Dani Dulberg sent the second pitch over the left field fence for her first career home run. That made it 3-2, CCU. The Chanticleers got Oakland to ground out to preserve the win.

Dreyer and Emerson each had doubles for the Golden Grizzlies. Danielle Peters extended her hitting streak to eight games. Junior Marisa Everitt gave up seven hits, three runs, all of them earned, walked two batters and struck out four in six innings of work.

Oakland closes out the CCU Softball Classic, Sunday morning with Sacred Heart. The game is scheduled to start at 11:15 a.m.
