STATESBORO, Ga. - Lipscomb University (1-0) scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cap an 8-0 win over Oakland University (1-0) in the season opener for the Golden Grizzlies at the GSU Eagle Classic on Friday. Senior Katie Dreyer and sophomore Leah DiCristofaro each had hits for OU.
Sophomore Brittany Doyle (0-1) took the loss in the start, throwing 2.0 innings, allowing three hits, three runs, two earned runs and fanned one.
The Lady Bisons struck for three runs in the first inning courtesy of a three-run home run off the bat of Abby Keese.
OU threatened in the top of the fourth inning with a base hit by DiCristofaro and walk by sophomore Kylie Schalz, but LU's Whitney Kiihnl fanned the next two batters to get out of the inning.
Lipscomb added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to win by mercy rule. Keese led the way with four runs batted in, going 2-for-3 with a home run.
Kiihnl (1-0) tossed a complete-game two-hitter, striking out 10 and walked just three.
