ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Sophomore Amy Trandell led the Golden Grizzlies with two shots on goal and OU outshot their opponent 16-9, but it wasn't enough, as the Oakland University women's soccer team (2-4) fell to the University of Michigan (4-5) by a 3-0 score Wednesday evening at the U-M Soccer Complex.
"Tonight, we played well," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "We gave away three goals and all three were on set plays. That's something we've been working on all season. When we're in the flow of the game, we play very well. It's the set plays that trip us up and we have been working on fixing that."
Oakland fell into a 1-0 deficit early in the contest when Holly Hein scored off a free kick from 25 yards out at the 10:30 mark, but the Golden Grizzlies had three chances to even the game up with quick shots on goal from freshman Kara Weber, Trandell, and junior Dani Haelewyn between the 20 and 23 minute marks, but all three were thwarted by U-M goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer.
The Wolverines struck again at 43:15 when Alex Jendrusch chipped the ball into the net to bring the score to 2-0 going into the end of the half.
Michigan would extend their lead at the 60:35 mark in the second half when Amy Klippert accepted a feed to the corner of the box and brought the match to what would be its final 3-0 score.
OU didn't let up, however, and launched 10 shots in the second half, including four close calls on goal from sophomore Shannon Doyle, sophomore Deanna Colarossi, Trandell and freshman Marlen Knoph , but none were able to connect with the back of the net.
In addition to holding the advantage in shots fired, Oakland also led in shots on goal 7-3 and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams were nearly equal in fouls, with Oakland committing just one higher, 10-9.
"They played hard and had some great scoring chances and in turn, we held them to very few chances, other than their three set plays," said O'Shea. "We're playing well; we're just a young team and giving away goals in certain circumstances. That's something that will improve with experience."
The Golden Grizzlies will look to snap their three-game skid when they continue their roadtrip against Northern Illinois University on Friday, Sept. 18. The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start and can be followed on Gametracker at www.ougrizzlies.com.
