INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Jessica Granger (5-6) tossed a complete game, scattering five hits, one earned run and struck out nine, freshman designated player Leah DiCristofaro went 2-for-3, while senior third baseman Caitlin Lynch and junior catcher Angela Righetti each homered to lead Oakland University (8-14, 2-1) to a Summit League series win over IUPUI (2-17, 1-2), 7-1, on Sunday at the IUPUI Softball Complex.
"We knew that this was a must win after the heartbreaker yesterday," said OU coach Glenn MacDonald. "It's amazing when you make all the plays on defense and move runners over what we can do. I was proud by the way the girls responded today."
Righetti drove in three runs with her three-run home run in the third inning, finishing 1-for-3. Lynch went 2-for-4, with her first home run of the season, while junior first baseman Katie Dreyer finished 1-for-2, with one RBI.
The Golden Grizzlies took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as DiCristofaro doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a base hit up the middle by Dreyer.
OU would open the game up in the third inning with five runs to increase its lead to 6-0. Sophomore Alyssa Deacon had an infield single, stole second base and scored after senior Stephanie Schall stole second and she then scored on an error by the center fielder on an errant throw by the catcher. The Grizzlies pushed three more runs across on Righetti's blast after back-to-back singles by junior second baseman Julie Owen and DiCristofaro.
The final run for the Grizzlies came on Lynch's leadoff solo shot in the fourth inning. The Jaguars would score in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run by third baseman/pitcher Amy Raker as Oakland won the third and deciding game in the three-game series by six.
The Golden Grizzlies scored seven runs, on nine hits and had no errors, while IUPUI had one run, five hits and committed three errors.
Oakland will travel to Macomb, Ill., to face Western Illinois (7-10, 3-0) next Saturday and Sunday, March 21-22. The games can be followed via live stats on www.ougrizzlies.com.
