OU Splits At IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Jessica Granger (4-6) tossed her first complete-game shutout, striking out 10, while sophomore right fielder Alyssa Deacon went 2-for-4, with two doubles, and freshman shortstop Kylie Schalz went 1-for-4, with a home run and two runs batted in, to lead Oakland University (7-14, 1-1) to a 6-0 win over IUPUI (2-16, 1-1) in game one. The Jaguars captured game two, 2-1, as the teams split a Summit League doubleheader on Saturday at the IUPUI Softball Complex.

The Golden Grizzlies took the lead in the nightcap, 1-0, in the top of the seventh inning as freshman first baseman Leah DiCristofaro singled to right field and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Angela Righetti. Junior Katie Dreyer then drove in the go ahead run with a pinch-hit single as OU broke the scoreless tie, 1-0.

The Jaguars responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs. Junior Mia Ettl smashed a two-run walk-off home run with one out to rally IUPUI to a 2-1 victory.

Sophomore Alison Tansel (1-3) earned a no decision, tossing 6.0 innings, scattering five hits, one run, one earned run and struck out two. Freshman Brittany Doyle (0-4) entered the circle with no outs and a runner on first base, recorded an out on a sacrifice bunt, but allowed the two-run homer.

DiCristofaro went 3-for-3 in game two to lead the Golden Grizzlies offensively. Senior second baseman Julie Owen and senior third baseman Caitlin Lynch each went 1-for-3. Owen also drove in a run in game one, finishing 1-for-2, along with Righetti finishing 1-for-3 and one RBI.

In the opener, the Golden Grizzlies took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning, highlighted by a two-run homer, her first of the season, by Schalz.

Granger then pitcher her way out of a bases loaded jam with consecutive strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth inning to preserve her shutout.

OU then plated three more runs in the seventh inning as Owen, Righetti and DiCristofaro each drove in runs for the Golden Grizzlies.

Oakland scored six runs, on eight hits and committed two errors, while IUPUI had no runs, five hits and two errors.

Game two was a pitcher's duel between Tansel and IUPUI freshman Samantha Bumbaugh (1-3). Bumbaugh tossed a complete game, allowing six hits, one earned run and struck out four.

OU scored one run, on six hits and had no errors, while the Jaguars scored two runs, on six hits and had no errors.
