CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Senior Taylor Traub went 2-for-2 with two doubles and an RBI, finishing as the only Golden Grizzlies player to pick up multiple hits as the Oakland University baseball team (1-3) dropped a 7-1 decision to Charlotte in the finale of the three-game set between the two teams at Hayes Stadium.
"We made too many mistakes and did not capitalize on opportunities," said head coach John Musachio.
Sophomore Greg Welke (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, in six innings of work.
In the first inning, OU had a prime scoring opportunity, putting runners on the corners with one out but a pair of pop outs ended the Golden Grizzlies' scoring threat. The 49ers got on the board in the bottom of the frame, scoring a single run on a sacrifice fly.
OU put runners on base in the second and third innings, but were unable to advance them past first base. However, in the fourth inning, OU took advantage of a leadoff double by senior Dan Ryan, and a followup RBI double by Traub to knot the game at 1-1.
The 49ers took advantage of a pair of OU errors in the bottom of the frame and one timely hit to take a 4-1 lead after the fourth inning, and then tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh and one in the eighth while the Golden Grizzlies were unable to sustain any offense, only putting two more runners into scoring position down the stretch.
OU's offense managed just five hits in the loss.
The Golden Grizzlies will remain in Charlotte to play a neutral-site game against Canisius at Hayes Stadium. First pitch Friday is set for 11 a.m.
