CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Seniors Dan Ryan and Taylor Traub both went 3-for-4, but the rest of the Oakland University baseball team (1-2) could only manage three hits, while Charlotte put together an eight-run sixth inning as the Golden Grizzlies dropped a tough 11-3 decision to Charlotte on Wednesday at Hayes Stadium.
The 49ers scored runs in the second and third to take a 2-0 lead, but Oakland rallied in the fourth, getting on the board after an RBI grounder by sophomore Scott Sexton, and tying the game on an RBI single by Traub. The game remained knotted at 2-2 until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Charlotte exploded for eight runs on six hits.
Freshman Kyle Teague (0-1) was chased in the 49ers' big inning, after allowing a total of five earned runs on seven hits, walking two. Sophomore Aaron Wick did not fare much better, lasting just a third of an inning and being charged with five runs on three hits with two walks.
Fellow freshman Connor Mielock came on and was able to close the door on Charlotte's big inning, and sophomore Kasey Kearcher and freshman Alex Wierenga combined to shut Charlotte down over the final two innings, but the damage was too much for OU to overcome.
The Golden Grizzlies tacked on one more run after a sacrifice fly by Merkle in the top of the eighth to set the final margin at 11-3. The Golden Grizzlies and 49ers will play the final game of their three-game set on Thursday, with a 4 p.m. game at Hayes Stadium.
