STATESBORO, Ga. - Senior second baseman Julie Owen smashed a grand slam and drove in a career-high five runs, going 2-for-4, senior third baseman Caitlin Lynch went 1-for-3, with one RBI, and junior center fielder Anne Cicchini finished 2-for-3, with two runs scored, but Georgia Southern (6-3) outscored Oakland University (0-5), 11-8, on the final day of the Holiday Inn Eagle Softball Classic on Sunday at Eagle Field.
Senior Jessica Granger (0-3) was the victim of some poor defense behind her as she recorded the loss in the circle. Freshman shortstop Kylie Schalz finished 1-for-2, with a double and senior left fielder Roberta Ches went 1-for-3, with two RBIs.
Oakland was unable to hold on to a lead this afternoon. After scoring four runs in the third and fourth innings, the Golden Grizzlies watched the Eagles storm right back with four runs of their own in each inning to tie the game at 8-8 after four innings of play.
The Eagles would score two runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth to go on to defeat OU by three. It is the second straight year Oakland has started the season 0-5, but the Golden Grizzlies rattled off five straight wins after that last season and are hoping to do the same.
The Golden Grizzlies will travel to Savannah, Ga., to face Savannah State University (8-6) on Monday afternoon. The non-conference doubleheader begins at 4 p.m.
