ROCHESTER, Mich. - Senior Jessica Boyle scored her third goal of the season off a free kick, but it was not enough for the Oakland University women's soccer team (1-7-2), as the Golden Grizzlies were unable to get out of an early 2-0 hole, falling 2-1 to the University of Detroit Mercy on Monday on the OU Soccer Field.
"We could have done better all over," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "We had some chances where we should have scored, and some chances where we missed were better than the ones they scored on. When you give up early goals it's tough to recover."
UDM got on the board first during the third minute as Trina Kochanski sent in a rebound from point-blank range, giving the Titans an early 1-0 lead. The lead was extended during the 17th minute as Melanie Slusher sent in her first goal of the year off a feed from Emily Kiely.
The Golden Grizzlies broke through on Boyle's unassisted goal at the 38:26 mark, but the Golden Grizzlies were unable to find the back of the net down the stretch, despite late opportunities by freshman Deanna Colarossi and senior Lia Williamson that just missed their mark.
Goalkeeper Kim Herbst made six saves in the Golden Grizzlies' losing effort.
OU will return to action on Friday, Oct. 3, as they open Summit League play at Centenary. A 6 p.m. kickoff is scheduled.
