Grizzlies Sweep IPFW, 7-6, 7-5

ROCHESTER, Mich. ???C Junior Taylor Traub picked up a walk-off RBI single in the opening game as part of a five-hit day, and junior Dan Ryan also posted a four-hit day as the Oakland University baseball team (13-21, 6-7 Summit League) swept past IPFW on the final day of their Summit League series, winning the opener 7-6 before taking a 7-5 decision in the second game. IPFW opened scoring in the first game with a solo homer in the top of the second inning. However, the Grizzlies claimed the lead in the bottom of the third as junior Andrew Stafford smashed a two-run single through the left side, giving OU a 2-1 lead. The Mastodons reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning after posting three runs, but OU tied the game as sophomore Brett Geschke belted a 1-2 pitch over the high fence in right-center, knotting the game at 4-4. Once again, the Mastodons claimed the lead in the next inning, scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead, but OU again tied the contest as Stafford scored on an error. In the seventh, the Golden Grizzlies took the lead as Ryan scored on a sacrifice fly, but the lead would be short-lived as IPFW scored an unearned run on an error in the top of the ninth inning, knotting the game at 6-6. The Golden Grizzlies put runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth to set the stage for Traub???s game-winning single. Stafford and Traub both had three hits in the win, while Geschke had two. Redshirt freshman Aaron Wick improved to 2-0 on the season, picking up the win after scattering three hits in 2.2 innings of relief. Junior Shane McCatty tossed two scoreless innings in relief. In the nightcap, the Golden Grizzlies jumped ahead after a two-run first inning after a leadoff homer by Wilson and an RBI single by junior Rob Merkle. IPFW claimed the lead after plating three runs in the third inning, and extended the lead to 4-2 after tacking on another run in the fourth. The Golden Grizzlies pulled to within 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth as Traub smashed an RBI single through the right side, and then knotted the game in the bottom of the fifth as Ryan hit a solo homer. IPFW reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth, but the Golden Grizzlies scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to go into the seventh and final inning ahead 7-5. Freshman Jeff Gorecki retired the first two batters he faced, but IPFW loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a hit batsman before Gorecki fanned Quentin Brown to seal the OU victory. Mark Leichtman picked up the win in relief for OU, improving to 2-0 on the season after allowing one hit and one run in 2.2 innings of work. Gorecki earned his first save of the season. Ryan had three hits in the nightcap, while Wilson, Merkle, and Traub all had a pair of hits in the winning effort. The Golden Grizzlies will return to action on Tuesday, May 6, hosting Western Michigan at the OU Baseball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. -30-
