Andrew Stafford went 2-for-6 with three RBI, and freshman Scott Sexton turned in a three-hit performance, but it was not enough to overcome the offensive onslaught of the George Washington Colonials, as the Golden Grizzlies fell 19-16 on Saturday at Barcroft Park. The game took over four hours to play, forcing the postponement of the day???s second game. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday. Oakland set the tempo for the contest from the very start. After junior
Justin Wilson drew a walk to start the contest, he quickly advanced to second after a failed pickoff attempt. Stafford singled Wilson home to open scoring, and then Sexton gave the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead after a double to left. Freshman Eric Ogg added an infield single to drive in a run before Joffrion belted a grand slam to right, giving Oakland a 7-0 lead before GWU made its first plate appearance. The Colonials pulled to within 7-3 after the first inning, and after shutting OU down in the second, pulled to within 7-5 after two. A two-run third inning knotted the game at 7-7, and the Colonials jumped ahead with a four-run fourth inning, taking an 11-7 lead. The Golden Grizzlies clawed back in the sixth, as Wilson led off with a single and Stafford smashed a two-run homer to pull OU to within 11-9. Sexton added his second RBI double of the game to plate junior
Rob Merkle, and then scored on an error to tie the game at 11-11. OU added a run as Ogg, who had reached on an error, scored on another error, giving the Golden Grizzlies a 12-11 lead. GW???s Chris Marsicano led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot to center, tying the game at 12-12. Once again, the Golden Grizzlies struck back in the top of the seventh. Using back-to-back doubles to open the frame, OU took a 13-12 lead after Merkle drove home junior
Dan Ryan. Merkle scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly before Joffrion belted his second blast of the day, a two-run shot that gave Oakland a 16-12 lead. GW picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh to pull to within 16-13, and after shutting the Grizzlies down in the eighth, GW exploded for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the eighth to take a 19-16 lead. The Golden Grizzlies loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth but were unable to plate another run as GW held on for the victory. Merkle and Sexton both picked up two doubles in a contest that saw every OU starter pick up at least one hit, and seven players pick up multiple hits. Freshman Greg Welke (0-1) suffered the loss for the Grizzlies in relief after allowing four runs, all earned, on five hits in one inning of work. Oakland will play a doubleheader against George Washington on Sunday at 11 a.m. to complete the three-game set. Both games are scheduled seven-inning contests. -30-
