Drew Jenison (Jenison, Mich.) going 3-4 with an RBI. Yinger retired the side in order in both the first and second innings. Senior
Ryan Heath (Ostrander, Ohio) hit a single in the bottom of the first inning and Jenison doubled in the bottom of the second for OU, but neither made it home and the game remained scoreless through two. The Eagles took at 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Andrew Marshall led off the inning with a long fly ball to the wall that looked as if it would drop in for a double, but Jension made a fantastic over-the-shoulder catch. Michael Boyd followed with a single to right field, the first hit of the game surrendered by Yinger. Boyd advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Kenneth Battison, then came around to score on a throwing error. Aaron Crooks laid down a bunt and beat the throw to first for a single, then came home on a single to the wall in right center by Kenneth Battiston. EMU???s three third inning hits would be the last off Yinger until the seventh. Oakland answered in the bottom of the third, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four runs to take the lead 4-2. Merkle led off the inning with an infield single and later advanced to second on a single to left field by Wilson. Carkeek drove in two runs with a single to left field with two outs on the board. Stafford worked the pitcher for a walk, then Ryan followed with a double to right center to drive home Carkeek and Stafford. Yinger hit the first batter of the fourth but recovered quickly, setting down the next three with a pair of strikeouts and fly ball to left. The Golden Grizzlies gave Yinger a cushion to work with in the bottom of the inning, scoring two additional runs to extend the edge to 6-2. After EMU???s Bobby Henderson fanned the first two batters of the inning, OU loaded the bases as Wilson walked, Heath singled and Carkeek was hit by a pitch. Stafford hit an RBI single to left field to drive in Wilson and Merkle was able to score on the play when the left fielder mishandled the ball. The game remained 6-2 in Oakland favor until the bottom of the sixth. Yinger retired the side in both the fifth and sixth innings to keep Eastern Michigan off the bases while Stafford slugged an RBI double in the sixth to raise the score to 7-2. Marshall hit a two-run homer over the left field in the top of the seventh???just the fourth hit given up by Yinger???to bring the Eagles within three 7-4. When Battiston singled to left later in the inning Yinger was relieved by senior RHP
Dan Dobberowsky (St. Clair Shores, Mich.), who was able to get the final out of the inning and OU escaped without any further damage. The Golden Grizzlies added another run in the seventh with an RBI single by Wilson for the 8-4 score. EMU had two runners on base with two outs in the top of the eighth as Jim Gulliver and Robert Wendzicki drew walks, but Dobberowsky struck out his second batter of the game to end the threat and keep the Eagles off the board. Carkeek led off the eighth with a home run to left field, his first homer since returning to the lineup this past weekend. Later in the inning Jenison doubled to right field to drive home another run and extend the OU advantage to 10-4. Dobberowsky set the Eagles down in order in the ninth inning, striking out the final two batters. Yinger gave up five hits, four earned runs and one walk while fanning five in the victory. Dobberowsky gave up no hits or runs while walking two and striking out four to earn the save. Starter Kevin Wammes was charged with the loss for the Eagles as he surrendered six hits and four earned runs in 2.2 innings. He was relieved by Henderson, who gave up six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out four in 3.0 innings. John Ballarin, Jeff Davis, Jeff Robinson and Wendzicki also threw relief innings for Eastern Michigan. Ballarin gave up an unearned run in 1.0 innings while Robinson surrendered three hits and two earned runs in 0.1 innings. The victory also marked the first win over a Mid-American Conference team of Head Coach
