Box Score Rochester, Mich. (May 4, 2007) ???C Oakland???s baseball team dropped a 15-2 decision to visiting Oral Roberts in Mid-Continent Conference action at OU Baseball Field this afternoon. Sophomore
Andrew Stafford (Sterling Heights, Mich.) led the Golden Grizzlies at the plate, going 2-3 with a walk and one RBI. Oral Roberts took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning as Jake Kahaulelio belted a double to left center allowing Pat Warfle to score from second base. The Golden Eagles took control of the game in the fourth, scoring eight runs on seven hits to extend the lead to 9-0. ORU batted around before the first out of the inning and five straight batters pounded out hits midway through the order to account for the majority of the RBI. Oakland brought home two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the score to 9-2. OU loaded the bases with three straight singles as sophomore
Rob Merkle (Bay City, Mich.) led off the inning with a hit through the right side and freshman
Josh Kozuch (Kawkawlin, Mich.) followed with a hit to the exact same spot. Sophomore
Justin Wilson (Blissfield, Mich.) laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line and beat the throw to first to load the bases for Oakland with no outs on the board. After ORU pitcher Chase Chapman fanned the next batter for the first out of the inning, he walked Stafford, who earned the RBI with the bases-loaded pass. Senior
Andy Shepherd (Rapid City, S.D.) drove in Oakland???s second run with a ground out. The Golden Grizzlies??? runs were the first that Chapman had surrendered in league play this season. ORU added a pair of runs in the sixth inning as Carter McQuigg brought home a run with a sacrifice fly while Warfle drove in another run. In the seventh Brian Van Kirk hit a sacrifice fly to center field for an RBI to bring the score to 12-2. The Golden Eagles posted two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth for the 15-2 final. Adam Johnson (Delphos, Ohio) started the game for Oakland, giving up eight hits, seven earned runs and two walks while striking out three in three innings to take the loss. He was relieved by freshman RHP
Tim Barry (Skokie, Ill.), who surrendered two hits, two earned runs and three walks while fanning one in one inning of work. Barry gave way to freshman LHP
Jake Arendsen (Zeeland, Mich.), who gave up five hits and six earned runs in 4.1 innings. Senior RHP
Dan Dobberowsky (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) finished the game, giving up one hit in 0.2 innings. Chapman earned the win on the mound for the Golden Eagles, scattering eight hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out 13 in eight innings. Dale Reneau closed the game for ORU, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out two. Oakland and Oral Roberts battle again tomorrow afternoon in a Mid-Con doubleheader at OU Baseball Field at noon.
