Oakland Victorious Over Rochester College in Home Opener

Box Score Rochester, Mich. (Mar. 31, 2007) ???C Oakland???s baseball team used 13 hits and solid pitching to win its home opener 16-3 over Rochester College at OU Baseball Field this afternoon. Senior Drew Jenison (Jenison, Mich.) led the Golden Grizzlies a career high five RBI while going 3-4 from the plate with three runs scored and two walks. Oakland jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning with a two-RBI double from Jenison and an RBI single by senior Andy Shepherd (Rapid City, S.D.). OU scored three runs without a hit in the bottom of the third inning to extend its lead to 6-0. Shepherd and senior Ryan Heath (Ostrander, Ohio) were both hit by pitches with the bases loaded, while sophomore Dan Ryan (Saginaw, Mich.) worked the RC pitcher for a walk with the bases full to account for OU???s runs. Shepherd added a run in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in sophomore Justin Wilson (Palmyra, Mich.) who had walked to lead off the inning. Rochester College registered a pair of runs in the sixth inning to cut the Oakland advantage to 7-2 as Joe Watros and Jamie Fry each brought home runs for the Warriors. Oakland batted around in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs to go ahead 12-2. Jenison singled to right field to bring in Wilson, then advanced to third with a pair of steals. Shepherd belted his first home run of the year, a two-run shot, over the left field fence. Sophomore Andrew Stafford (Sterling Heights, Mich.) also drove home a run later in the inning. Fry singled to second base for his second RBI of the game for the Warriors in the top of the eighth for the 12-3 score. Stafford and Wilson each drove in runs while Jenison hit a two-RBI single to center field in the bottom of the inning for the 16-3 final. Junior LHP Matt Trausch (Charlotte, Mich.) earned the win for Oakland, scattering six hits, two unearned runs and two walks throughout six innings while striking out three. He was relieved by senior Adam Johnson (Delphos, Ohio), who gave up two hits, one earned run and one walk while fanning one batter in two innings of work. Freshman Kasey Kearcher (Otsego, Mich.) closed the game for the Golden Grizzlies, giving up two hits in one inning. Starter Mike Ivkov was charged with the loss for the Warriors, surrendering six hits, seven earned runs and seven walks in five innings. Shepherd finished the game with four RBI to tie a career high while Wilson and Jenison each stole three bases a piece. Oakland and Rochester College square off once again tomorrow afternoon at OU Baseball Field at 1:00 p.m.
