Oakland Swept by Michigan in Twinbill

Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score Ann Arbor, Mich. (Mar. 24, 2007) ???C Oakland???s baseball team fell to host Michigan 4-1 and 4-3 in a doubleheader at Ray Fisher Stadium this afternoon. Sophomore Justin Wilson (Palmyra, Mich.) led the Oakland offense in game one, going 1-1 at the plate with two walks and a run scored, while sophomore Andrew Stafford (Sterling Heights, Mich.) led the charge in the nightcap, going 3-3 with a home run and three runs scored. The Wolverines took a 2-0 lead in the opener with an unearned run in the first and a sacrifice fly by Jason Christian in the second accounting for UM???s runs. Oakland sliced the lead in half 2-1 in the top of the third as a ground out by Stafford allowed Wilson to come home from third base. The Golden Grizzlies threatened again in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs, but Wolverine pitcher Andrew Hess was able to strike out the final batter to avert the danger and end the inning. Michigan added two runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-1. Adam Abraham???s sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Kevin Cislo later in the inning gave the Wolverines a three-run cushion. Hess sent the Golden Grizzlies down in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the win for UM. Junior LHP Matt Trausch (Charlotte, Mich.) was charged with the loss, giving up four hits, four earned runs and four walks while striking out one in five innings of work. Hess went the distance to earn the win, scattering five hits, one run, three walks and four strikeouts through seven innings. The Golden Grizzlies jumped on the board first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Back-to-back singles by Stafford and senior Drew Jenison (Jenison, Mich.) put runners on the corners with two outs for OU in the top of the inning. Stafford then came around to score on a double steal to give OU the one-run edge. Oakland extended its advantage to 2-0 in the fourth inning. Senior Kevin Carkeek (Arlington Heights, Ill.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring home Stafford, who had led off the inning with a double to left field. The Wolverines overtook OU in the bottom of the inning with three runs. Abraham led off with a homer, while Chris Berset and Eric Rose each drove in runs later in the inning to give UM its first lead of the game 3-2. Stafford tied the score 3-3 in the sixth with a two-out solo shot to left, his second home run of the season. But the Wolverines got the run back in the bottom of the inning with consecutive doubles by Rose and Christian for the 4-3 final. Senior RHP Scott Boleski (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) started for OU, giving up seven hits, three earned runs and one walk while striking out two in 3.1 innings. He was relieved by senior RHP Ben Darga (Milford, Mich.) who surrendered five hits and one earned run in the loss. Starter Chris Fetter gave up five hits and three earned runs while fanning four to earn the win for Michigan. Ben Jenzen earned the save, striking out two in one inning of work. Oakland and Michigan conclude the four-game series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
