Oral Roberts Completes Sweep of Oakland

Box Score (Game One) Box Score (Game Two) Tulsa, Okla. (May 21, 2006) ???C Oakland???s pitching had a hard time finding answers for Oral Robert???s offense here today, as the Golden Eagles pounded out a total of 27 hits on their way to 21-1 and 7-0 wins over OU. The victories gave ORU a sweep in the conference series as both teams prepare for next weekend???s Mid-Con Tournament in Tulsa. Kyle Crepeau (Waterford, Mich.) and Justin Wilson (Palmyra, Mich.) had a pair of hits apiece for the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland (19-36, 13-11 Mid-Con) had a chance to score in the top of the first when Crepeau singled and Bryan Marulli (Sterling Heights, Mich.) was hit by a pitch. Kevin Carkeek (Arlington Heights, Ill.) followed with a liner to right center, but the ORU centerfielder was able to run it down for the third out. Oral Roberts (35-14, 17-2 Mid-Con) broke the game open in the third, scoring six times on five hits. The Golden Eagles opened the inning by loading the bases on a double and a pair of walks. Andy Bouchie followed with a run-scoring single before Chad Rotherford made it 3-0 with a double to right center. ORU tagged on three more runs on a single, a hit batter and a sac fly before it was all over to take the 6-0 lead. That proved to be enough for ORU starter Daniel Greenwalt who held Oakland to five hits and one run in his seven innings of work. The only run that the Golden Grizzlies could get against him came in the top of the seventh when Marulli and Kevin Chalifour (Zeeland, Mich.) opened the inning with a pair of infield hits. Marulli then moved up to third on a double-play ball and scored on a base hit off the bat of Chad Winkler (Port Huron, Mich.). It was a case of too little, too late for Oakland, however, as the Golden Grizzlies trailed by nine when they scored. A lack of hits hurt Oakland???s chances in the second contest as well. The Golden Grizzlies threatened again in the first, putting two on with one away on an error and a single from Crepeau. Both OU runners were then caught stealing, however, ending the threat. Both starting pitchers, David Thomas (Almont, Mich.) for OU and Erik Crichton for ORU, were on top of their games over the first four innings, with each surrendering just one hit apiece to keep the contest scoreless. Walks proved to be the undoing for Oakland in the bottom of the fifth when Oral Roberts put its first two runners on via the free pass. A wild pitch and an error brought home the first run of the game for the Golden Eagles, who then went on to load the bases on a walk and a single with no outs. Jake Kahaulelio then brought in two more runs with a single to left and Oral Roberts never looked back. The Golden Eagles added three more runs in the inning to take a 6-0 lead. Two-out singles by Wilson and Ryan Heath (Ostrander, Ohio) gave Oakland a scoring chance in the sixth, but Wilson was picked off second to end the threat and the Golden Grizzlies did not pick up a hit the rest of the game. Oakland will remain in Tulsa for the week as it prepares for the Mid-Con Tournament beginning on Thursday. The Golden Grizzlies will be the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 2 seed Western Illinois in the first game of the tournament at 4:30 Eastern.
