Game One Box Score Game Two Box Score Chicago, Ill. (Apr. 24, 2005) ???C Oakland University???s baseball team completed the series sweep of Chicago State Sunday by winning 10-0 and 11-5. The Golden Grizzlies are now 8-24 overall and evened out at 6-6 in Mid-Continent Conference action. The Cougars fall to 3-39, 2-10. OU right-handed ace
Paul Phillips (Blissfield, Mich.), battling flu symptoms over the weekend, picked up his first win of the season in game one, allowing just two hits and a pair of walks over seven innings while striking out seven. For the second straight day, Oakland scored five runs in the first inning, though this time the Golden Grizzlies kept Chicago State from posting any runs of their own in the opening frame. The first five OU batters walked and all five crossed home plate before the end of the inning. The fourth inning saw three more Oakland runs with
Bryan DeLamielleure (Romeo, Mich.) and
Nate Recknagel (Lake Orion, Mich.) scoring for the second time in the game. With CSU threatening in the bottom of the sixth, Phillips and the Golden Grizzlies got themselves out of a tremendous jam. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Cougar centerfielder grounded into a double play with Phillips making the throw to home and Oakland catcher
Kurt Rosenacker (Cincinnati, Ohio) making the toss to first. On the ensuing at bat, Hector Navedo grounded out to Phillips to end the inning unscathed. Oakland had a spectacular ninth inning with
Tim Doig (Farmington, Mich.), Rosenacker and
Kyle Crepeau (Waterford, Mich.) each smashing consecutive two-out doubles from the bottom third of the lineup. Doig and Rosenacker scored during the series of hits and the Golden Grizzlies took care of the Cougars in the bottom of the inning for the 10-0 shutout. Right-handed reliever
Scott Boleski (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) came in for the final two frames, allowing three hits, to combine with Phillips for the 10-run shutout. In the second game of the afternoon, Chicago State took the first lead with a run in the first by Jonathan Sakurai. Oakland, however, responded with two runs in the second when senior first baseman
Ty Herriott (Ostrander, Ohio) belted his fourth home run of the season over the right center fence, which also scored Recknagel who had doubled. CSU tied things up in the bottom of the third when Sakurai crossed the dish for the second time in the game on a double by Chris Goya. Oakland retook the lead in the top of the fifth when
Brad Noel (Westerville, Ohio) hit a two-out single to send Rosenacker home, who also singled then advanced to second on a pass ball. The Cougars did not go away, however, scoring two more runs in the fifth to retake a one-run lead (4-3). Recknagel???s third consecutive double of the game was a zinger to right center, which scored Crepeau and
Will Tolllison (Toledo, Ohio) to put the Grizzlies up by one again. Six more runs scored in the inning to propel OU to an 11-4 lead. Chicago State answered with a run in the seventh, but it was too little too late as Oakland completed the series sweep of the Cougars by a score of 11-5. Right-hander
Bryan Bishop (Okemos, Mich.) got the win to improve to 1-1 on the season, allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Oakland returns to action next weekend when they host Western Illinois in two double-headers, beginning at Noon both days.
