Ty Herriott (Ostrander, Ohio) combined for five hits, which included a pair of home runs in a 22-1 game one pummeling of the Cougars. The Golden Grizzlies scored three runs in the fifth inning of game two on their way to a 4-2 win. The sweep puts Oakland at 16-28 overall and 9-7 in the Mid-Con. Oakland pounced on the Cougars early in game one as they scored 17 runs over the first three innings. Herriott???s first homerun of the game came in the first on a three-run shot to center field. He drove in two more runs in the second with his second bomb to the same spot, which made it 6-0.
John Sullivan (Saginaw, Mich.) connected on his fourth homer of the season two batters later to add two more runs to the board. Chicago State starter Houston Mad last just 1-3 of an inning as he gave up three earned runs on four hits. Gary Ward had a much harder time against Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies teed off on the reliever with 11 runs on nine hits with eight of those runs coming in the third inning to eliminate any idea of a Chicago State rally.
Kurt Rosenacker (Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Ryan Heath (Ostrander, Ohio) both homered to bring in five of those runs in the third. The Cougars finally managed to score in the ninth to end Oakland???s bid for a shutout with a homerun by Derrick Bass. Oakland starter
Dominic Carmosino (Cincinnati, Ohio) picked up his fourth win of the season in his second complete game. He allowed seven hits and struck out seven batters. Mad (1-6) picked up the loss for Chicago State whose pitching staff only managed five strikeouts in the game. It took a bit longer for Oakland to put some runs on the board in game two but they once again struck first when Herriott belted a single in the fourth to drive in Heath. Rosenacker hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to drive in
Bryan Marulli (Sterling Heights, Mich.) as part of a three-run inning to make it 4-0. Marulli beat the tag on a bunt single to get on base one batter earlier. The sophomore finished 5-for-8 on the day with two RBIs and three runs scored to help Heriott in pacing the Oakland offense. Chicago State managed to cut the lead to two with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. John Torres hit an RBI double to bring in one of those runs. The Cougars made things interesting in the seventh with two outs and a runner on second until Packard grounded out to third base to wrap things up.
Billy Schmieder (Chillicothe, Ohio) pitched a complete game in the win for Oakland. He gave up two runs on seven hits to improve to 3-6. Aaron Lang pitched 5 1-3 innings in the loss for Chicago State allowing three earned runs on six hits. Oakland heads to Mount Pleasant to face Central Michigan on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. showdown with the Chippewas.
