Billy Schmieder (Chillicothe, Ohio) pitched Oakland???s first complete game shutout of the season, allowing just two hits while striking out eight batters, to pick up his second win in a 4-0 victory over Valparaiso in game two of Sunday???s conference doubleheader. In the opener Oakland scored its only run in the second inning for an early lead before the Crusaders scored seven runs over the next three innings on their way to handing the Golden Grizzlies an 8-1 loss. The win came in the last day of the weekend series between the two teams to give Oakland an 11-24 overall record and an even 4-4 mark in the Mid-Con.
Ty Herriott (Ostrander, Ohio) provided Oakland with its lone run in game one off of a leadoff homerun to start the second. The hitting became contagious; unfortunately it came on the other side, as the Crusaders were able to build up a seven-run lead over the next three innings. Kevin Kutansky drove in two runs to get things going in the third with a two out single. He came back in the fifth with a two run blast as part of a four-run inning. Brian Rzepka closed out the scoring in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Eddie Hannan who reached base on an error to lead things off.
Dominic Carmosino (Cincinnati, Ohio) pitched 4 1-3 innings in the loss. He struck out five batters but allowed seven runs on 10 hits. Yergin Harvey pitched all nine inning for Valparaiso for the win. He struck out nine batters and allowed just three hits. Oakland???s first three runs were unearned in game two thanks to some shaky fielding by Valparaiso, who committed three errors. The first came in the third that allowed the Golden Grizzlies to once again take the early lead. They would not concede this time around though and added two more the very next inning to build a 3-0 advantage.
Bryan DeLamielleure (Romeo, Mich.) was disruptive on the base pads with a stolen base in the fourth inning. The pick off attempt by catcher Troy Garrett sailed high, allowing DeLamielleure to come in behind
Bryan Marulli (Sterling Heights, Mich.) who hit a double two plays earlier.
John Sullivan (Saginaw, Mich.) hit an RBI single in the seventh, scoring
Tim Doig (Farmington, Mich.) who singled to lead off the inning for the final run. Schmieder pitched his third career complete game and first of the season to prevent a series sweep by the Crusaders. Eric Brauer pitched 4 1-3 innings for the loss in game two, despite not allowing any earned runs and only four hits. Oakland returns home to host Toledo in its next outing on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
