Box Score Lawrence, Kan. (Feb. 25, 2004)???C Kansas registered runs in all but three of the eight innings they played, scoring 17 runs on 22 hits in a 17-2 rout against Oakland Thursday evening at Hoglund Ballpark to sweep the four-game series between the two teams. The Golden Grizzlies struck first but the Jayhawks struck often as Oakland falls to 0-4 on the season, while Kansas improves to 12-7-1. Oakland???s bats proved largely ineffective, collecting just seven hits among seven players.
Ryan Heath (Ostrander, Ohio) proved the most effective despite registering only one hit as he had one RBI and scored one run. Oakland kept Kansas scoreless in the first inning for the first time in the series and scored one run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead, its first in four games.
Bryan Marulli (Sterling Heights, Mich.) got things going in the second with a single up the middle. He stole second and reached third off a single by
Josh Patton (Troy, Mich.). Marulli came around to score one batter later when
Ryan Freiburger (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) singled to short. However, the lead would turn into a four-run deficit in the bottom half of the inning as the Jayhawks scored five runs. Matt Tribble started the scoring spree with a solo home run to right field off of Oakland starter
Kyle Boehm (Rockford, Mich.) who lasted 3.1 innings allowing 10 runs on 12 hits with only one strikeout. Heath hit a solo shot to center field in the fifth for his first home run of the season to make it a 10-2 score. Kansas responded to Oakland???s second run with another five-run inning in the bottom of the fifth due in part to a grand slam hit by Travis Metcalf for his sixth home run of the season. After that Oakland could manage only two hits over the final four innings against four different Kansas pitchers. While Boehm picked up the loss in his first game of the season, Kansas starter Jacob Jean pitched 5.0 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits, while striking out five batters to collect his first win. Ritchie Price went 6-for-6 at the plate for Kansas along with three RBIs and two runs scored. Metcalf was also perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Oakland will return home to recover from its series against Kansas before heading to Kentucky to take on Eastern Kentucky in a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 5 at 2:00 p.m.
