Six-Run Seventh Lifts Michigan Over Oakland

Box Score Ann Arbor, Mich.???C Oakland held a four-run lead heading into the seventh inning, but could not maintain the advantage as they suffered a 10-9 loss to Michigan in baseball action at Ray Fisher Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Grizzlies allowed six runs in the bottom of the seventh which started off with the Wolverines first two batters reaching base, the first on a walk and the second being hit by a pitch. Oakland senior Peter Varon (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to give his team its second lead of the game as he finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs. Oakland got off to a slow start going down in order in the first inning. Michigan took advantage by plating one run in the bottom half of the inning for the early lead. Jake Fox hit an RBI triple to left center to bring home Brock Koman. The Golden Grizzlies responded in the second inning when John Sullivan (Saginaw, Mich.) hit a two-run homer with two outs. It was his second home run of the season. In the bottom half of the inning Oakland starter Paul Phillips (Blissfield, Mich.) sent Michigan???s hitters back to the dugout in order, striking out two while forcing Gino Lollio to ground out to first. The Wolverines came back with two runs the following inning. A.J. Scheidt crossed home plate first on a throwing error by Oakland third baseman Bryan Marulli (Sterling Heights, Mich.). Mike Sokol hit a double to right center on the next play to bring home Nick Rudden for the one run lead. After tying the game with one run in the fourth Oakland???s first two batters reached base in the fifth. Michigan reliever Tim Leveque walked Ryan Freiburger (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) to load the bases, setting up Varon???s second home run of the season, which gave the Golden Grizzlies a four run lead. Leveque managed to get the next two batters out before Sullivan doubled to right center but Oakland could not take advantage of the runner in scoring position as Spencer Hynes (Clarkston, Mich.) struck out to end the inning. Gordon Hosbein (St. Joseph, Mich.) relieved Phillips in the bottom of the sixth with the score knotted at three. Both teams traded a run in that inning before Michigan???s game-breaking six run seventh inning. The Wolverines chipped away at the lead in the seventh as Sokol singled to center field to bring home the first run and start the rally. With the very next batter, Fox doubled down the left field line to bring home two runs with no outs. This brought in Brad Morenko (Marysville, Mich.) to pitch for Hosbein who allowed five earned runs on five hits in one inning of work. Oakland managed one run in the ninth as Bobby Garza walked home Chris Hilton (Amherstburg, Ont.) with two outs but Brad Leach (Shelby Twp., Mich.) struck out swinging with the bases loaded to end the inning and give Leveque his first win of the season for Michigan while Hosbein endured his second loss. Oakland falls to 13-18 on the season and will begin conference play this weekend when they host Western Illinois for a pair of weekend doubleheader games beginning Saturday at 12 noon.
