Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score Ypsilanti, Mich. ???C Oakland???s baseball team traveled down the road to Eastern Michigan to take on the Eagles in a non-conference baseball doubleheader this afternoon, dropping both ends of the double header to increase its losing streak to eight games. Eastern took the first game 4-0 and came back late in the second game to take a 10-7 decision. Oakland fell to 12-15 with the losses while Eastern improved to 10-15 overall. Eastern picked up a pair of runs early in game one, scoring twice in the first off Oakland starter
Dominic Carmosino (Cincinnati, Ohio) on a two-run homer off the bat of Ryan Goleski. It proved to be all that the Eagles would need as their starting pitcher, Dave Pieron, held Oakland in check the entire game. He wound up with a seven-inning complete game win, allowing eight hits while striking out eight Golden Grizzlies. Oakland left 10 runners on base, but could not come up with the big hit when it was needed. Carmosino took the loss for OU, falling to 2-6 on the season while Pieron improved to 4-3 with his effort.
Ryan Freiburger (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) and
Steve Kniebbe (Bridgeport, Mich.) each had two hits to lead OU. Goleski and Ryan Ford each had a pair of hits to lead Eastern in game one. Oakland???s offense came to life in the second game, with the Golden Grizzlies scoring five times in the second inning after Eastern Michigan had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on another two-run bomb by Goleski.
Spencer Hynes (Clarkston, Mich.),
Brian Keim and
John Sullivan (Saginaw, Mich.) led off the inning with singles, loading the bases.
Peter Varon (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) followed with another base hit to plate the first run.
Jeff Hall (Perrysburg, Ohio) then walked to force home the tying run. An error on Eastern???s pitcher scored Sullivan to put OU in the lead.
Bryan Marulli (Sterling Heights, Mich.) then bounced into a double play that scored Varon before Freiburger brought home the final run of the inning with an RBI single. Eastern plated two more runs in the third on an RBI single from Tim Clouse and an RBI double from Ford to cut the OU lead to 5-4. Oakland answered in the top of the fourth, scoring twice to up its lead to 7-4. Varon led off with a base hit and came home on a Marulli double. Marulli moved to third when the Eagle center fielder misplayed the ball and then scored on a passed ball. Oakland maintained its lead until the sixth, when Eastern Michigan came up with six runs to take the lead for good. A walk and an OU error put two runners on for the Eagles to start the inning. With one out Derrick Peterson doubled home both runs to cut the OU lead to one before Goleski doubled him home to tie the game at 7-7. Another Grizzly error and a hit batsman loaded the bases for Eastern with one out.
Kyle Boehm (Rockford, Mich.) came on to pitch for Oakland, but walked the first batter he faced to give the Eagles the lead. Ford then delivered a single to left that was misplayed by Marulli, resulting in the final two runs for Eastern.
Gordon Hosbein (St. Joseph, Mich.) took the loss in the second game in relief, allowing six runs in 1.1 innings to fall to 2-1 on the season. Ross Winiemko got the win for Eastern, going four innings in relief, giving up two runs and striking out four. Marulli, Freiburger, Keim, Varon and
Gerry Dufour (Windsor, Ont.) each had two hits in the second game for OU. Goleski and Ford again led the Eagles, getting two hits apiece and driving in three runs. Oakland will take the field again on Sunday, April 13 when the Golden Grizzlies will host Madonna University at Noon at the OU Baseball Field.
