Box Score Chicago, Ill. - Oakland???s men???s basketball team picked up its second Mid-Con road win of the season, led by
Mike Helms??? (Detroit, Mich.) 32 points, as the Golden Grizzlies raced past Chicago State, 90-71. The win Oakland???s second straight and improved its record to 10-9 and 3-3 in the Mid-Con. Chicago State fell to 3-17 and 0-6 in the league. Much like it did against Texas A&M-CC on Monday, Oakland came out on fire. Helms started the game by hitting his first three shots of the game, two from three-point range. Chicago State managed to match the scoring of the Golden Grizzlies early, and when Helms hit his third shot with 17:28 to play, it gave OU only an 8-5 lead. Oakland???s offense kept the heat on for the rest of the half, however, as the Golden Grizzlies shot an impressive 60 percent in the first 20 minutes. With OU???s offense clicking on all cylinders, the Golden Grizzlies started to open up an impressive lead.
Pierre Dukes (Grand Blanc, Mich.) was one of the hot hands for OU, hitting five-of-six treys in the half for 15 points. His shot at the 13:28 mark pushed the Oakland lead to 26-14, the first time in the game OU led by more than 10.
Rawle Marshall (Detroit, Mich.) was also hot, scoring 14 first half points. When he completed a three-point play at the seven minute mark, Oakland had extended its lead to 48-30. Chicago State would not completely fold, and went on a 9-0 run in the final minutes, highlighted by treys from Craig Franklin and Derrick Wimmer to cut into the OU lead. As a result the Golden Grizzlies took a 58-43 lead into the locker room. Chicago State opened up the second half with an 8-4 spurt, cutting the lead to 62-51 on a hoop by Wimmer four minutes into the half. Oakland kept its composure and did not allow the Cougars to get any closer. A pair of free throws from Helms and
Cortney Scott (Lansing, Mich.) followed by a strong move by Scott in the post pushed the OU advantage back to 15 at 70-55 with 11:28 left. The Cougars came back and cut the lead back to 11 points on a tip-in by Rubeen Perry with seven minutes to play, but Oakland then went on a 14-2 run over the next five minutes that put the game out of reach. Two dunks by Helms and another slam by Marshall closed out the run and put a punctuation on the Oakland win. Helms led all scorers with 32 points, his third straight 30-point effort for the nation???s leading scorer. Marshall finished with 20 points and a team-high six rebounds, while Scott and Dukes totaled 18 and 15 apiece, with all of Dukes??? points coming from behind the three-point line. Marshall also added five steals to the OU cause. Chicago State was led by Wimmer???s 13 points.
