Late Inning Heroics Propel Oakland In Baseball Action

The Oakland University baseball team used a 10-run eighth inning to down Toledo, 10-8, in a non-conference match-up at the OU Baseball Field this afternoon. The Golden Grizzlies got a solo shot from reigning Mid-Con Player of the Week Peter Varon (Bloomfield Hills/Andover HS) and a game-tying three-run homer by Spencer Hynes (Clarkston/Clarkston) in the midst of seven straight hits in the eight inning, including 11 hits, for en route to their second victory in a row. Oakland improves to 11-23 overall, while Toledo falls to 11-22. Toledo waster no time getting on the board as Mitch Maier led off the top of the first with a home run. The Rockets second hit of the game came in the third inning as Taylor Eckel hit the second home run of the game as OU trailed 2-0 after three innings. UT scored two more runs in the fourth inning and added another in the fifth to lead 5-0. UT's left-handed pitcher Matt Kovacs left the mound for the Rockets after pitching six scoreless innings, allowing four hits, striking out 10 and walking three. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Varon led off with his fourth home run in as many games to slice the lead to 5-1. Tony Marulli (Sterling Heights/Utica HS) and Matt Gabrielli (Novi/Novi HS) followed up with singles for the Golden Grizzlies. Third baseman Ty Herriot (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley HS) then doubled into left center and drove in a run as OU trailed 5-2, with second and third. Hynes then deposited one over the right field wall and the game was tied at 5-5. OU didn't stop there as Jeff Hall (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg HS) singled and Chris Kimball (Anchor Bay/Anchor Bay HS) doubled. Short stop Kyle Boehm (Grand Rapids/Rockford HS) ended the seven consecutive hits with a sacrifice fly into right field as OU led 6-5. Nick DiPonio (Highland/Orchard Lake St. Mary's HS) recorded his first RBI of the game with a single in right field as OU led by two, 7-5. Varon collected his second hit of the inning and Marulli repeated his earlier single with an RBI double to center field as Oakland led by three, 8-5. Herriot responded with his second hit of the inning with an RBI single to right field and Gabrielli hit a sac fly to center as OU led by five, 10-5. UT's Chris Arvay started the ninth with a single and Maier followed that up with a double to put runners at second and third. Eckel was hit by a pitch and Toledo had the bases loaded with no outs. Pinch-hitter Roger Hernandez hit a two RBI single to right center and Oakland's lead was cut to three, 10-7. Right-handed closer Boehm proceeded to the mound for the Golden Grizzlies to try and stop the comeback for the Rockets. Boehm got a ground out for the Grizzlies and allowed one more run before getting two fly outs to preserve the 10-8 victory. Boehm picks up his second save of the season pitching the ninth inning. Left-handed pitcher Brent Brown (Niles/Brandywine HS) picked up the victory for OU in relief. Brown (2-3) pitched the eighth inning and three batters in the ninth, giving up three hits, three earned runs and striking out one. Hynes led the way with three RBI's with his game-tying three-run homer in the eighth inning. He finished 1-for-2. Varon finished the game 2-for-5 with a home run and one RBI. Herriot went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI's, while Boehm, DiPonio and Marulli each had two hits. Oakland will travel to Macomb, Illinois to face Western Illinois in a Mid-Continent conference four-game series over the weekend. The games will be played April 27, 28 at 12 noon CST. Box Score
