Box Score Rochester, Mich. ???C Oakland University had a pair of 20-point scorers for a third straight game, but this time it was not enough as the Akron Zips overcame a five-point halftime deficit to take an 88-84 win over the Golden Grizzlies. A cold shooting night did in OU as the Grizzlies could only muster a 39.2 percent evening from the floor while Akron shot nearly 50 percent with a 49.2 mark. Oakland fell to 2-1 while Akron improved its record to 2-1. Oakland had things under control early, jumping out to an 11-2 lead three and a half minutes into the contest, with
Mike Helms (Detroit, Mich.) accounting for seven of those points, including opening the game up with a three-pointer. Akron cut the OU lead to 20-18 on a trey by John Hollingsworth halfway through the half, but Oakland stretched its lead back to 11 on a pair of
Rawle Marshall (Detroit, Mich.) free throws with a little more than six minutes to play. Akron then went on a 12-0 run and took a 32-31 lead on a jumper by Derrick Tarver at the 4:21 mark. Oakland recovered and scored nine straight, to take a 40-32 lead on a pair of free throws by Helms with two and a half minutes left in the half.
Pierre Dukes (Grand Blanc, Mich.) hit a jumper at the buzzer and Oakland took a 44-39 lead at the half. A Dukes three-pointer four minutes into the second half gave Oakland a 55-45 lead, but that would prove to be the high water mark for Oakland. Akron quickly cut into the lead with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes, taking a 58-55 lead on a Darryl Peterson lay-up. Oakland came back to take a two-point lead on two more free throws by Helms, but a lay-up by Hollingsworth gave Akron back the advantage, one that they would not give up the rest of the way. Forced to foul down the stretch, Oakland could not get any closer than three points the rest of the way, as the Zips hit 12-of-17 free throws over the last six minutes of the game to keep the Golden Grizzlies at bay. Helms led Oakland with 27 points, going a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Marshall finished with 20 points while
Kelly Williams (Detroit, Mich.) put up a double-double of 10 pints and 12 rebounds. Tarver led Akron with 23 points and seven rebounds with Hollingsworth adding 22 points and seven assists. Oakland will make its first road trip of the season next, traveling to Texas to take on Texas A&M in the first meeting ever between the two schools. The Grizzlies will take on the Aggies on Monday, December 2 at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
