Oakland Closes Out Season With Split Versus Western Illinois

Box Score Game One Box Score Game Two The Oakland University baseball team split with Western Illinois Sunday afternoon on the OU Baseball Field. The Golden Grizzlies took game one 7-3 thanks to a game-winning grand slam in extra innings by senior Casey Caid (Three Oaks/Three Oaks River Valley HS). OU dropped the second game by a score of 2-1. Oakland finishes the season 11-43, 7-19 Mid-Con, while Western Illinois moves to 12-38, 10-16 Mid-Con. Western Illinois opened up the scoring in game one with a run in the fourth inning to lead 1-0. OU responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the fourth courtesy of a home run by senior Kip Harris (Midland/Midland HS) to tie the game at one. The Golden Grizzlies tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead heading into the seventh inning. The Leathernecks wouldn't go away as they scored two runs in the seventh inning with two outs as the teams were knotted at 3-3. After holding Western Illinois scoreless in the top of the eighth inning, junior Nick DiPonio (Highland/Orchard Lake St. Mary's HS) led off the bottom half of the inning with a double. DiPonio advanced to third on a balk and WIU loaded the bases with intentional passes to Harris and senior Rob Brockman (Park Hills, KY/Dixie Heights HS). Caid then made the Leathernecks pay with a blast over the left field fence for the 7-3 victory. Freshman lefthanded pitcher Dominic Carmosino (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier HS) went 7.0 innings, giving up five hits, three runs, zero earned runs, walking four and striking out a season-high 10. Freshman righthanded pitcher Steve Kneibbe (Bridgeport/Bridgeport HS) picked up the victory in relief throwing a scoreless eighth inning. Kneibbe improves to 3-3 overall. Leading Oakland offensively was DiPonio, Harris and Brockman. DiPonio went 2-for-4 with two doubles, Harris went 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run (9) and Brockman went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Caid chipped in with a 1-for-4 performance, including his game-winning grand slam for his seventh homer of the season. Western Illinois jumped on top of Oakland in the nightcap with two runs in the third inning after a couple errors by the Grizzlies to lead 2-0. The Golden Grizzlies scored a run in the fourth inning, but couldn't manage another run as they stranded eight runners and fell by a 2-1 final. Senior John Griffin (Bloomfield Hills/Lahser HS) led OU in the second game going 2-for-3 with a double. Senior lefthanded pitcher Jason Roberts threw 6.0 innings, giving up four hits, two runs, zero earned runs, walking two and striking out five. Roberts ended the season with a 1-3 record. WIU's Chris Donahoe (2-3) threw a complete game giving up five hits, one run, one earned run, walking five and striking out five. Oakland ends the season with a final record of 11-43.
